US parents fight hijacker for baby

2010-11-26 14:52
Cape Town - In a dramatic incident that was caught on video, a US couple had to hold on for their lives, and their baby's, as a hijacker drove away with the infant at a Kansas City petrol station on Monday night, say reports.

According to ABC News, Melanie and Aaron Richman had stepped out of their car while filling up their tank and talking to relatives they were travelling with, leaving their 6-month-old baby in the back seat.

As they were talking, a man got into their car and started to drive away with the baby still in the car.

The 24-year-old mother then ran after the car and broke the passenger-side window with her elbow while holding on to the door. Aaron, aged 22, also gave chase.

"It was really just instinct," he told ABC News. "Everything happened so fast. We really had to react. There was no time to worry about if he had a weapon."

Miraculously, the young father managed to dive into the moving car.

"I was just sitting upside down in the passenger seat kicking him and telling him my baby was in the car. 'You're stealing my car. Get out of my car'," he said.

According to the report, the car ended up on the pavement and the hijacker got out and managed to escape.

While the couple was treated for bruises and cuts, their baby was left unharmed but covered in glass.
