US pastor burns Qur'an to protest

2012-04-29 18:03

Miami - A controversial Florida pastor has burned copies of the Qur'an and a depiction of the prophet Mohammed to protest the imprisonment in Iran of a Christian clergyman Youcef Nadarkhani.

The burning, attended by 20 people and streamed live over the internet, was carried out by pastor Terry Jones' church in Gainesville, Florida, the Gainesville Sun said, and a video of the burning was uploaded to YouTube by the pastor's supporting group "Stand Up America Now."

The Pentagon had urged Jones to reconsider, expressing concern that American soldiers in Afghanistan and elsewhere could be put at greater risk because of the act, according to the newspaper, but Jones insisted to go ahead with the protest in the name of the release of the Christian pastor in Iran.

Nadarkhani was arrested in October 2009 and condemned to death under Islamic Sharia law for converting to Christianity when he was 19.

Now 34, he is a pastor of a small evangelical community called the Church of Iran. The supreme court in July 2011 overturned the death sentence and sent the case back to the court in Nadarkhani's hometown of Rasht.

His retrial took place at the end of September 2011 with no verdict made public.

Several Western countries, including the United States, Britain, Germany and France, condemned the death sentence and said they feared it could be carried out soon.

The US pastor's assistant burned a copy of the Qur'an in March 2011 and broadcast the ceremony on the Internet, with the images inciting violence in northern Afghanistan, in which at least 12 people were killed.

I don't know if burning a holy book will change anything for the better. If anything, it will turn more people into 'radical fools'

      Deana - 2012-04-29 19:42

@Peter- not all muslims are \radical fools\. A muslim, from a muslim country, Iraq, sent us my deceased father's Bible that he saved from burning in the incident that killed my dad and 39 others. We must not judge- rather pray.

As an atheist I try to be objective when judging various religions and their followers. In this case an Iranian citizen is at first sentenced to DEATH then this sentence is later reduced to a lengthily prison sentence merely for being a christian, then a christian nutjob pastor in america retaliates by burning a BOOK, paper cardboard and print, yet in this mad, mad world the bookburning creates more of a fuss than the imprisonment of a human being. Its a f*cking book for crying out loud, one of millions of identical ones being printed by the thousands a day. As an atheist at least I can proclaim my atheism in any christian country without being killed or imprisoned, not like most muslim countries, like the case of Alexander Aan in indonesia who was sentenced to five years for merely stating on his facebook page that there are no gods. So here is a message to all muslims; THERE ARE NO GODS.

      Jaba - 2012-04-30 08:04

Its time Islam respected the world if they want to earn the worlds respect. I respect all except for those who call me a ‘non-believer’!! Apartheid in the Middle East must end; Christians, Jews, Buddhists & Hindus are not given freedom to practice their religion in most of the ME, In Saudi they have separate roads for Muslims and non-Muslims (remember the different bathrooms/busses etc for blacks and Europeans?), while women are treated like second grade in almost the Arab world and gays are stoned to death. I apologise if anyone is hurt for my lack of respect to the above facts on the ground. For me, when the religion of “peace” starts acting like it, I will respect them too. Until then, could Ziyaad please explain if Islam means the religion of peace or the religion of submission?

Have you ever heard obout a Christian being sentenced to death for converting to Satanism, Hindoism, or any other religion?? NO, because we are always trying to keep the peace, and we are not bloodthirsty, or war hungry. And still there are so many the world who would like to totaly destoy us. Is it not time we as Christians also stand up for our GOD, and make our point?

      Shaun - 2012-04-29 19:01

Are you confused? You say you are a Christian but yet Jesus taught "turn the other cheek".

Shaun I did not implicate war, or mention anything about agression, but is it not time we stand up for our GOD like they do. And by the way, Jesus said "when your brother hit you on the cheeck, tur the other" He did not indicate anyone else. This was to taught brotherlove, not world love.

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-04-29 19:44

Niemand is beter of minder belangrik as ‘n ander nie. As ons met hierdie gedagte ons medemens benader is dit vir ons moontlik om met meer liefde teenoor hulle op te tree.

Only the young girls who are virgins may live; you may keep them for yourselves. - Numbers 31:17,18 If even then you remain hostile toward me and refuse to obey, I will inflict you with seven more disasters for your sins. I will release wild animals that will kill your children and destroy your cattle, so your numbers will dwindle and your roads will be deserted. (Leviticus 26:21-22 NLT) "Then I heard the LORD say to the other men, "Follow him through the city and kill everyone whose forehead is not marked. Show no mercy; have no pity! Kill them all – old and young, girls and women and little children. But do not touch anyone with the mark. Begin your task right here at the Temple." So they began by killing the seventy leaders. "Defile the Temple!" the LORD commanded. "Fill its courtyards with the bodies of those you kill! Go!" So they went throughout the city and did as they were told." (Ezekiel 9:5-7 NLT) Callous, murderous bastard. PAH!

The ancient Hebrews were exceedingly proud of their holocausts having murdered whole nations to the last man and male children, and taking their women as sex slaves. I had to read this article twice to make sure I wasn't imagining that this had happened. I cannot begin to express my absolute disgust at the lack of respect for someone else' religion regardless of what it is but also at the ignorance that had to accompany such an act. The Qur'an is a book which promotes peace, love, respect and high moral standards similar to that of the Bible, but like any extremist group, things will be twisted and morphed to suit what they tell young impressionable people. So Pastor Whoever-you-are, enjoy hell! The disrespect and judgement of others is highly frowned upon by your Christian God

@Pricess "my absolute disgust at the lack of respect for someone else' religion." HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! All people deserve respect, but not all ideas do. I don’t respect the idea that a man was born of a virgin, walked on water and rose from the dead. I don’t respect the idea that we should follow a "Prophet" who at the age of 53 had sex with a nine-year old girl, and ordered the murder of whole villages of Jews because they wouldn’t follow him. Ridicule is the only weapon which can be used against unintelligible propositions.– Thomas Jefferson

@Princess "The Qur'an is a book which promotes peace, love, respect and high moral standards similar to that of the Bible." Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Allah has cursed the unbelievers and proposed for them a blazing hell. - 33:60 Unbelievers are enemies of Allah and they will roast in hell. - 41:14 When you meet the unbelievers, smite their necks, then when you have made wide slaughter among them, tie fast the bonds, then set them free, either by grace or ransom, until the war lays down its burdens. - 47:4 And Allah really, really respect women. Wives have the same rights as the husbands have on them in accordance with the generally known principles. Of course, men are a degree above them in status - Sura 2:228 'Isn't the witness of a woman equal to half of that of a man?' The women said, 'Yes.' He said, 'This is because of the deficiency of a woman's mind.'

Why should freedom of religion in our constitution be allowed to undermine other more important principles of it? Why do we turn a blind eye when preachers of various religions damn homosexuals, premarital sex, use of condoms, the role of woman, other religions or anything else their beliefs may think immoral or sinful? In any other realm of our free society this is unconstitutional or would be considered as hate speech.

Such a nice guy this Jesus bloke. Matt 5:28-32 - Jesus says marriage to a divorcee is adultery; and a man who ogles a woman has already committed adultery; and that you must cut off your hand or pluck out your eye if it offends. Matt 6:19-34 - Jesus says don't save any money and don't plan ahead. Matt 8:32 - Having no regard for private property, Jesus destroys a herd of someone else's pigs. Matt 10:34 - Jesus says he brings not peace on earth but "a sword." Matt 19:12 - Jesus says the best way for a man to be sure of getting into heaven is to have himself castrated. Mark 11:13 - Jesus destroys a fig tree for not bearing figs out of season. Mark 14:4-7 - Jesus says it is more important to anoint him with precious ointment than to give to the poor, who will always be here. (Why not just get rid of poverty?) Mark 16:18 - Jesus says anyone who believes in him can play with venomous snakes or drink poison without harm. (This act has been often tried, with rather unsatisfactory results.) Luke 12:47-48 - Jesus says it is permissible to whip slaves. Luke 14:26 - Jesus says no man can be his disciple unless he hates his parents, siblings, wife, children, and himself as well. Luke 19:27 - In telling a parable, Jesus insinuates that anyone who denies his rulership must be killed.

Matt 5:28-30: 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell. Matt 6:19, "19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of a heartless world, just as it is the spirit of a spiritless situation. It is the opium of the people. \r\nThe abolition of religion as the illusory happiness of the people is required for their real happiness \

You want respect - you give respect - and sadly it seems that every nation on earth has to respect Islam - yet every Islamic nation on earth does not respect any other religion... so.... you receive what you sow... maybe time to welcome yourself to tolerance, acceptance and the 21st century???

      mholthuysen - 2012-04-29 20:08

No Said - I wouldn't burn a Qur'aan - as I am civilized, tolerant and reside with 2 feet in the 21st century - would I receive the same tolerance, civilization and acceptance if I'd wear a chuppah in Saudi Arabia or read the bible in Tehran? Of course not... and that is the point....

      www.hephzibah.wapsite.me - 2012-04-29 20:13

Hi foolish and ignorant said! You're living in a fantasy and fairytale world. The islamists have burnt out millions upon millions of HOLY BIBLES.SHAME ON HYPOCRITICAL ISLAMISTS AND IGNORANT ISLAMIC SYMPATHISERS! WAKE UP!!!islam WANTS THE WHOLE WORLD'S PITY

      themba.ntuli - 2012-04-29 20:24

Where is George W. Bush to deal with this elements who want to spread acts of terror on christendom time to revive the great crusaders of medieval europe to halt the spread of jihadist on holy christian lands

      mholthuysen - 2012-04-29 20:55

Oh yes John - well I have too - and during my last visit to Jeddah I was ostracized for being a non Muslim; had to sleep in a separate hotel, use a different entrance, and rest assured you would not buy a bible or torah anywhere in that place... Try and have a bible in your suitcase at Jeddah airport - and we'll talk again.

      John - 2012-04-29 20:57

Read the following and decide who is really the terrorists: http://800pg.co.cc/geeklog//staticpages/index.php?page=911

      Fred - 2012-04-29 21:18

Yeah right, John. Good for teenagers finding their way in the world, not mature adults. Keep looking. Be sure to have a truly curious mind though, not an ignorant racist one.

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 04:29

@Mike Your comment has nothing to do with the story which is about a religiously brain addled Christian trying to stoke up religious conflict.

      mholthuysen - 2012-04-30 08:33

@ aliweyah - than it makes perfect sense that someone is sentenced to death because he changes his religion; religious freedom a la Iran... oh yes the mandatory Qu'uran course on order for ALL Iranian children... nice try to convince me about religious freedom in Islamic countries... @ zaatheist - it has everything to do with it - as it once again uncovers the issue behind it; and now all over the Islamic world flags, bibles, torahs, puppets, books will go up in flames - a fatwa will be issued... showing the tolerance, and acceptance of the Islamic world to other religions...

      Fidel - 2012-04-30 09:05

Yes Mike, there are both churches and synagogues in Iran.

  • Ameenah - 2012-04-29 20:31

Its sad that in this day and age, the only way he knows how to protest, is to burn a few of our Qurans. Well, I hope he buys a few hundred more! The Islamic publishers and book sellers will make a fortune! The proper way to dispose of them is to burn them so let him carry on!

  • Yusuf - 2012-04-29 20:46

shame on the pastor, where ignorance is bliss tis folly to be wise!!!!!!!

  • mnmwale - 2012-04-29 21:08

I can't blame the pastor for that. Islam must learn to respect human rights and other religions if it wants other people and other religions to respect it. No one has a right to kill in the name of religion or God. If Iran kills the Chrhstian convert, then the world must charge it for murder.

      planetdonovan - 2012-04-29 22:33

I suppose you mean in the 21st century, since killing in god's name was blessed by the pope during the crusades.

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 04:31

"must learn to respect human rights and other religions." Yeah, right. Like the Christians have always done, hey?

  • Ahmed - 2012-04-29 21:19

is it a democracy? :U, this is stupid.. and we dont give a dam about Iran.. this is Islam and its not for Iran.. its for all. = Muslim Sunni =

  • www.hephzibah.wapsite.me - 2012-04-29 21:19

Do u know how I got treated by muslims just because I was a christian.I was the only christian among all the muslims. Was sworn at and called stupid just because I was a christian.I had to bear it out and just take it.I didnt hate them. They were ignorant

      Ahmed - 2012-04-29 21:24

some few people told you stupid.. so you mean ISLAM told you, you are stupid?

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 04:32

@hephzibah.wapsite.me All people who believe there is an invisible magic man in the sky (who grants wishes) suffer from a peculiar mental illness, including you.

  • Fred - 2012-04-29 21:28

Burning the Quran is one thing, blowing people up is quite another. Perhaps Islamists and Jihadists should burn the bible. This would be a massive move forward.

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 04:33

      Oh, but they often do.

      nspaynter - 2012-04-30 08:24

Fred, as a Christina I have no problem with the Bible being burnt. It's a book of paper and print. The words themselves are Holy and cannot be destroyed by burning. While the Bible is reduced to ashes the Words will continue to live.

      Fred - 2012-04-30 08:37

I hear you, and I don't mean it disrespectfully. I mean that it would be far better for paper to be burnt than human beings blown up. I think we're on the same page.

  • RemoteMedic - 2012-04-29 21:45

This idiot should be prosecuted as a domestic terrorist. He is endangering the lives of his own citizens by his actions.

      John - 2012-04-30 00:10

Who is the bigger threat to society? The one who burns a book, or the ones who kill over a book being burned? Bibles were burned in Afghan before the Qur'ans were burned. Nobody were killed for burning bibles, even though it might have offended Christians. The Qur'ans were burned because they were used to spread incitement (written messages inside). And therefore Americans were killed. If you can't see/discern the real threat, then you will surely become its victim.

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 05:41

@RemoteMedic "used to spread incitement (written messages inside)." Obviously you have never read the whole bible? Kill People Who Don’t Listen to Priests - Deuteronomy 17:12 NLT Kill Witches - Exodus 22:17 NAB) Kill Homosexuals - Leviticus 20:13 NAB Kill Fortunetellers - Leviticus 20:27 NAB Death for Hitting Dad - Exodus 21:15 NAB Death for Cursing Parents - Proverbs 20:20 NAB and Leviticus 20:9 NLT Death for Adultery - Leviticus 20:10 NLT Death for Fornication - Leviticus 21:9 NAB Kill Nonbelievers - 2 Chronicles 15:12-13 NAB

      nspaynter - 2012-04-30 06:58

@zaatheist You have quoted verses from the Old Testament of the Bible which applies to the Jews, not to modern day Christians. In the New Testament Christians are commanded to LOVE.

      nspaynter - 2012-04-30 07:07

@@zaatheist, and BTW Lev 20:13 is not referring to homosexuals. It is talking about men who have sex with other men and pretend that they are women. This often happens in male only situations like in prison or the military. This is degrading to the man that is being used.

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 11:57

@nspaynter A cafeteria buffet Christian. This bit of the Bible I agree with. All that horrible stuff committed by my god I ignore. Its the same god dammit.! When some religious people want to use ancient texts to justify acting upon their prejudices, citing the book of Leviticus suits them just fine. On the other hand, when such people want to indulge in practices prohibited by those same ancient texts, ignoring the bible suits them just fine. For example, Leviticus. Particularly the bit about no tattoos. It's amusing stuff. I frequently wonder why, among the many rules and prescriptions therein, Christians don't sacrifice oxen or go to the "priest" to be inspected for "white marks". It's all there, right next to the warning regarding the abomination of homosexuality

  • jf.lambert2 - 2012-04-29 22:58

I do not care for an american christian pastors looking for attention, but when muslim mob burns flags from any western european countries, we have to shut up! when they burn churches, christian symbols or jewish ones, we have to shut up. when they kill non muslim in southern Sudan or anywhere else, we still have to shut up! So, now that a christian guy wants to burn up something of theirs, Why should I care? and since anyone being bad towards Islam is supposed to go to hell, why would you care making them live hell here as well???

      zaatheist - 2012-04-30 11:58

What a illuminating expose on Christian love. Jesus must be oh so proud of you.

  • Jean - 2012-04-30 11:33

the truth of our world is that you have radical religious nut jobs, and now the new adition radical atheists who believe themselves higher than the people who believe. NEWS FLASH for both sides, you are both part of the problem not the solution. The solution is not a world with no religion the solution is a world were people are tolerent of each others beliefs, your atheist great who cares im christian great who cares, it makes no difference.

  • callie.jordaan - 2012-06-17 12:56

nice job pastor! for a christian its going to be even more hard to do things like these, knowing that you will get attacked by the devil.
