US 'shouldn't be disturbed by protests'

2012-09-15 14:10

Washington - US President Barack Obama urged Americans on Saturday not to be disheartened by images of anti-American violence in the Islamic world, expressing confidence that the ideals of freedom America stands for will ultimately prevail.

"I know the images on our televisions are disturbing," Obama said in his weekly radio and internet address. "But let us never forget that for every angry mob, there are millions who yearn for the freedom, and dignity, and hope that our flag represents."

The comments came after furious protesters targeted symbols of US influence in cities across the Muslim world, attacking embassies, schools and restaurants in retaliation for a film that mocks Islam.

At least six protesters died in Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon and Sudan on Friday as local police battled to defend American missions from mobs of stone-throwers, and Washington deployed US Marines to protect its embassies in Libya and Yemen.

The protests broke out when Muslims emerged from mosques following weekly prayers to voice their anger at a crude film made in the United States by a right-wing Christian group that ridicules the Prophet Muhammad.

Obama assured that his administration was doing everything it could to protect Americans who were serving abroad.

"We are in contact with governments around the globe, to strengthen our co-operation, and underscore that every nation has a responsibility to help us protect our people," he said.

"We have moved forward with an effort to see that justice is done for those we lost, and we will not rest until that work is done."

    He is a weak president

      Andre - 2012-09-15 15:54

Weak, like all Democrats! He sucks up to the USA's enemies.

US need strong leader like in China. We are slowly taking over the world for business and leadership.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-15 16:39

China is run by an oppressive, neo-Communist, unelected politburo. Thankfully the world is moving in exactly the opposite direction. So will China.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-15 16:44

As to China "taking over the world for business", where is CHina selling most of its cheap products? The US. What happens when the US economy is weak? Do you get it. In the modern world which is connected and heavily interdependent, no one country is taking over anything.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-09-15 20:12

Yung S.H. Long, Are you talking about the kind of 'strong' leadership, that needs 800 BILLION US per year, for INTERNAL security, sothat NOBODY steps out of line ???????

  • fishycraig - 2012-09-15 14:25

Not since Jimmy Carter has America had such a weak president. Funny how the politics of today mirror the last year of Carter - weak economy, appeasement of militant Islamic people, high fuel prices, etc.

I don't see him having a second term, but you never know. The press for some strange reason like him, and with their backing everything is possible.

It's called the Main Stream Media (MSM), and the MSM is run by a clique of liberals who despise a Strong America, and any values that they consider to be conservative. They are however being sidestepped by Talkradio and the internet, and are in fact losing relevance.

I thought maybe u'll blame the one who started to mock the muslim community.Mr OB knows that in politics there's a way of leader or president to be ousted by his/her own people. Now is your time, the film actress is against you that's why She did that.

After all the vitriol from South Africans during the George Bush reign and his aggressive interventions overseas I was quite surprised to now see all of these South African comments condemning Pres Obama for being weak. This is almost laughable coming from a nation that can't even protect its own farmers and citizens within its own borders.

      Madhi - 2012-09-15 19:55

Anyone who think Obama is week is either dumb or does not know american politics. Obama is untouchable when it comes to american security by any republican leader at the moment because he beat GWB's record on pre emptive strikes killing thousands of innocent muslims in the process. U might know that is the only useful measure americans use, how many muslims have u killed over how many strikes multiplied by the number of american soldiers killed in ur compaigns.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-15 23:04

That's thinking Madhia? Not. That's uninformed, reactionary street rhetoric plied by Jihadists and unelected dictators, the very ones doing the killing you describe. Why would you fall for that? 100 million Muslims of the Middle East have broken free, removed those self-serving dictators who only truly think of themselves.

Bush fought Aids in Africa more than any other American president. Bush spent billions on Africa... the only thing that is African in Obama is his skin colour. Obama doesn’t care about Africa – fact is it seems like he has distanced himself from his own roots.

      AnthonyfromAfrica - 2012-09-16 09:31

Jaba, You are so right !! The American President, we all love to hate , including myself, did more for Africa than any other Head of State, American or other !!! THAT is the complexity of International politics!!! But try to explain this, to the loony left !!

Don't be disturbed that you seriously pissed off a few billion peole?? Be very disturbed!

      LanfearM - 2012-09-16 07:49

I don't actually understand why the US is suddenly the target after the video. The guy who made the video is an Egyptian Coptic Christian. Yup, I guess it is all the fault of the "evil West" again. How DARE they have such modern concepts as freedom of speech.

      fred.fraser.12 - 2012-09-16 08:03

      Who's you Derek?

      roger.kaputnick.90 - 2012-09-16 15:25
