US state orders gay history in textbooks

2011-07-15 22:17

San Francisco - California became the first US state to require that public school textbooks include the accomplishments of gay, lesbian and transgender Americans as Governor Jerry Brown signed the mandate into law.

"History should be honest," Brown said in a written statement released by his office.

The measure won final passage from the state legislature earlier this month when it passed on a 49-25 party-line vote, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed.

"This bill revises existing laws that prohibit discrimination in education and ensures that the important contributions of Americans from all backgrounds and walks of life are included in our history books," Brown said. "It represents an important step forward for our state.

The law also requires that public schools teach the contributions of Pacific Islanders and the disabled.

California already mandates that schools include historical accomplishments by Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans and European Americans.

Republicans who opposed the legislation argued that it would write an agenda into school textbooks.

Randy Thomasson, president of the conservative SaveCalifornia.com, said Brown had "trampled the parental rights of the broad majority of California mothers and fathers who don't want their children to be sexually brainwashed".

"The only way parents can opt-out their kids from this immoral indoctrination is to opt them out of the entire public school system, which is no longer for morally-sensitive parents and their children," Thomasson said.

It could still be several years before California students start reading about gay accomplishments in their textbooks.

The state's department of education has said that, because of budget woes, new textbooks will probably not be adopted until 2015.

They even have to include European Americans as some kind of 'sect'! Hahahaha, where did americans come from? Were they mostly beamed in from New Mars, or where ever Tom Cruise comes from?

  • william.botha - 2011-07-15 22:47

Did they achieve because they were gay? So the heading of event could read, Mr/Mrs.X will be remembered for whatever, and by the way, Mr/Mrs.X were gay, or Mr/Mrs.X was celibate, or Mr/Mrs.X was a transvestite, or Mr/Mrs.X were heterosexual. This is getting ridiculous really.

      BrixtonBriefcase - 2011-07-16 00:37

I reckon the crux of it would probably be the actions taken by individuals who worked within the gay liberation movement. Harvey Milk, Stonewall etc. Similar to what Martin Luther King or Rosa Parks meant for the black civil rights movement. Nothing wrong with that, and far from ridiculous.

      iranianprince - 2011-07-16 01:29

gay liberation? 3% of the nation arn't getting equal rights they are getting more than equal rights. For a group that only want a 'fair shake' they certainly got more than they bargained for. I noticed that the gays dont go to the polls anymore they just get senators and governors who are bought and sold like 2nd hand car salesmen to push whatever they want through. so don't accept the gays, embrace them and it's law that your children have to study all about them. So gays rights really deny your rights at the end of the day.

      Liberty - 2011-07-16 03:05

No it means that if somebody did something worth recording in the history books it should be recorded and taught, regardless of sexual orientation. You wouldn't teach what their sexual orientation was like Edison invented the light bulb and he was straight or he was gay. Common man your comment is ridiculous

      Theresa - 2011-07-16 08:31

This is truly "disgraceful/disgusting!!".. our world is going backwards.. to the days of Sodom and Gamora (however you spell that.. I'm not even interested to check what the correct spelling is!!). AND another thing.. why does everyone refer to HOMOSEXUALS as gays?? The correct word is HOMOSEXUAL!! The word 'gay' means happy/merry!! AND what's WORSE is that HOMOSEXUALS are now even allowed to raise "children" together!!! What a sick world we are living in today.. woe betide.. this will come back with serious consequences to mankind...

      milab - 2011-07-16 08:44

@Theresa, second time around your comment is even more boring than before...

      BrixtonBriefcase - 2011-07-16 20:27

@Iranianprince: "3% of the nation arn't getting equal rights they are getting more than equal rights" How do you reckon gay people are being unfairly benefited? And by unfairly, I mean MORE than heterosexual people? What rights are they being given that straight people don't have. Please fill me in...

      BrixtonBriefcase - 2011-07-16 20:32

@Theresa: Pardon me if I don't take the cookie cutter opinions of a woman who "couldn't be bothered" to check simple facts too seriously. You need go no further than this very website to know the SICK, SICK, SICK things heterosexual people have done to their children. This week there was a story about a mother having a sexual orgy in front of her 9 year old daughter, then threatening to kill her if she didn't pose for porno pics for one of the men. And you have the nerve to decide whether someone will make a nurturing parent based on sexual orientation. Newsflash - just because someone got knocked up during straight sex, doesn't necessarily make them a fit parent.

      william.botha - 2011-07-16 22:54

Liberty, I'm not aware of deliberate omission of achievements of individuals due to their sexual preference, the ridiculous part is the incessant manner in which sexual orientation is brought to syllabus. No matter which way you look at it, it is ridiculous. Smacks of obsession. If it were pertinent to liberation of sexual preference, it becomes specific for that cause, and would then not be ridiculous. I may well be that the article is just lacking professional reporting.

You are in URGENT NEED of a GRAMMAR teacher.... WTF did you just say? Don't MUFFLE WITH YOUR MOUTH FULL!!!

      milab - 2011-07-16 08:20

      Completely unintelligible!

      Martin du Plessis - 2011-07-16 12:21

I'm assuming this is an Ironic statement.

  • circuitochiuso - 2011-07-16 04:26

They will probably start with Sodom & Gomorrah. In order? not to discriminate the people that don't belong to homosexualism, they must also introduce compulsory study of other religions too. And for some people that love animals why not introduce bestiality? Otherwise that poor goat-lover will feel discrimnated too. In the end we are all animals, right( Darwin)? Or maybe a little bit of pedophilie too, keeping in mind that no politician today dares to condemn a certain marriage of a 9 year old girl.

      zaatheist - 2011-07-16 04:34

The typical crappy argument from a brain addled Christian who has been brainwashed into believing that his ever loving jesus and god hate and want to kill people that are different. 150 years ago these religious nutters were ranting on to protect slavery. Up till into the 1980's they ranted on about against people with dark skins and used the bible to justify apartheid. They lost those battles. And since religion always attempts to separate the sheep form the rest of society to make the sheep feel superior they need bogeymen. Gays are in. When they eventually lose this battle they will come after the non-believers again.

      cerveza - 2011-07-16 06:08

@Circuitochiuso - ignore zaatheist, he thinks he is so "open-minded" but he fails to realise the best thing about not being defined to a religion, is that you don't have to attack other religions, you are free, so he is failing to be a real atheist as he still acts like a religious nut and the average everyday religious person from any religion are more accepting and less hateful than him

      cerveza - 2011-07-16 06:16

@Circuitochiuso - To get back to the argument, as far as I am aware many achievements by gay people were left out of history, just like through history, mentioning some people when writing it was ignored because of their skin colour, religion and even gender. Other people added in history was added and their sexual orientation was just ignored, and while I feel it is not really important to that Leonardo da Vinvi is gay when reading a school book, it is probably important for some scared kids to know he/she is more normal than society wants him to believe. Society itself might realise it is not as unnormal as the are made to believe when they see a list of famous people through history being gay, realise that one of their heroes could be gay, and I see no reason why this information should be hidden. So your Sodom and Gomorrah comment and rest of the ranting is out of place and of the point of both the article and the real issue

      Creeky - 2011-07-16 06:40

I wonder if 'they' will highlight the part Homosexuals played in the Bible too?? Surely that is part of History if some people believe in the Bible? Or were they, Homo's, even mentioned in the Bible???

      Creeky - 2011-07-16 06:42

And while ytou busy explaining the role Homosexuals played in the Bible.... throw in their role in the Quran too!

      Theresa - 2011-07-16 08:44

@ zaatheist - This is truly "disgraceful/disgusting!!".. our world is going backwards.. indeed to the days of Sodom & Gomorrah. AND another thing.. why does everyone refer to HOMOSEXUALS as gays?? The correct word is HOMOSEXUAL!! and I will continue to use the 'correct' word when appropriate. The word 'gay' means merry/happy! AND WORSE still is that HOMOSEXUALS are now allowed to raise "children" together!!! What a sick world we are living in today.. woe betide.. this will come back with serious consequences to mankind...

      Umfubi - 2011-07-16 11:48

@cerveza: you are exactly right - you have totally grasped what this is about, unlike some of the narrowminded bigots on here. Very good post - well done.

  • circuitochiuso - 2011-07-16 05:17

@zaatheist Are you twisting the truth? Who said anything about killing. We are having a nice civilized dialog and not a battle. I think you are Rasist against anybody that don`t belong to you clan. Did you read all my propositions? Dare to prove me wrong?

  • circuitochiuso - 2011-07-16 06:36

@cerveza Do you know another starting point for a gay history lesson other than S&G? And talking about the `normality`that you have invoked, how do you consider bestiality and pedophilie? I am only sugesting some parallels for people with a different moral standard than these guys. Sorry, I have replaced a with u. Whoever interested in famous homosexuals can google all day long. There is a limit when it comes to educate children in public schools.

  • deminimus - 2011-07-16 07:07

Let the history books start with sodom and gomorrah and stop being euphemistic about unnatural acts.

      BrixtonBriefcase - 2011-07-16 20:35

"Unnatural acts?" The only sex folks get obsessed about is the sex they're not getting.

  • Mikus - 2011-07-16 07:44

Well done California, it's absolutely right that the creators of Vaseline are immortalized ;) But then, like the book recording Italian war heroes it may prove to be a fairly short read.

      BrixtonBriefcase - 2011-07-16 20:46

What have you ever done to even be considered as the topic of a single sentence in a history book, except crack ignorant second hand jokes at the expense of others? BTW - I hope you don't use vaseline as a lubricant when you fail in getting the ladies wet, because then chances are that you probably have an std already. Get an education about safe sex practices.

Oh blah blah Theresa!! You are so boring. Just get a life - oh and while you're doing it, allow others to live theirs too! I seriously doubt you will be a better parent than a loving gay couple would be.

      Syndrome - 2011-07-16 08:53

@milab - agreed. This woman is part of a group that will be swept away with time as people become more tolerant of each other.

      Creeky - 2011-07-16 10:22

Milab and Syndrome.... I think Theresa is a "CLOSET" lesbo... Most people that are Homophobic are "IN THE CLOSET" and are dying to "COME-OUT"!!!

      x - 2011-07-16 10:46

Children raised by gay, tolerant and thoughtful parents will probably come through the growing up process better than YOUR children Theresa. If you have kids, I hope for their sake none of them are homosexual. Remember, all homosexual kids come from heterosexual parents - and you are not any more special than the 5% to 10% of parents around the world who have homosexual kids. There are about HALF A BILLION homosexual people in the world. Think about that if you can.

      BrixtonBriefcase - 2011-07-16 20:36

Theresa, take a tranquilizer...you're hysterical! BTW - judging by your archaic rants, your kids probably hate you anyway, so it's better that you don't judge the parenting skills of others.

  • AntiMike - 2011-07-16 11:48

It amazes me the typical Islamic (also othodox 'Christian' and Jewish etc) point of view of how 'immoral' and 'unnatural' homosexuality is, but I suppose it's fine everyone is entitled to their own indoctrinated opinion. But one should rememeber that you are fortunate enough to be tolerated in our(non-Islamic etc) society/government/law and allowed to express your own opinions and practise your ways of life pretty much as you're entitled to. You also don't have to live in a country with gay rights etc, so maybe you should rather return to Iran/Libia/Saudi/Pakistan/Egypt/Yemen where you can enjoy a narrow minded oppression not unfamiliar or un-practised to/by the Christians centuries ago. The modern world has no place for "justified" religious intolerance, because the world is far bigger and wider than the keyhole you observe it through, and can just as easily show you a taste of the intolerance you're so willing to promote.
