US tests Osama bin Laden DNA

2011-05-02 10:21

Washington - The US is conducting DNA testing on slain al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden and used facial recognition techniques to help identify him, a US official said on Monday.

Bin Laden was identified by the assault force that killed him in a fire fight in Pakistan in which he resisted and was shot in the head, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Results of the DNA tests should be available in the next few days, the official said.

The strike force was on the ground for less than 40 minutes and the operation was watched real-time by CIA Director Leon Panetta and other intelligence officials in a conference room at CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, the official said.

"When word came in that the operation was a success, CIA officials in the conference room had a rather large applause," the official said.

Why dispose the body if the DNA results haven't been confirmed?

      Agent-Jay - 2011-05-02 11:19

Muslim tradition when it comes to burial rights. The dead have to be buried before sunset on the same day if I'm not mistaken. But it still is fishy if you ask me.. Excuse the pun :)

Ya, probably trying to make sure that there is no body. This guy they killed probably isn't even the real Osama Bin Laden. Since when does the American army respect Muslims, in particular their most loved Osama. Making the body disappear means that no body will ever be able to confirm whether it was really him. Also, this whole DNA thing is very suspicious. I really doubt they have DNA samples to compare it to.

@greensplash - a few points for you: 1) The US army has many, many Muslims serving in it, so yes, they would respect and carry out burial rites in accordance to the religions of those slain. I can't get you exact numbers, but two sites I visited pegged the number at 60,000 - 90,000 Muslims actively serve in the US Army or its satellite branches. 2) The Americans would opt for a sea burial, simply because any place where Osama would be buried on land would end up becoming a focal point for extremists, a kind of 'holy ground'. Osama's body itself would risk being stolen or vandalised. A lot of people put a lot of store by the dead: think of Lenin or Kim-Il-Sung's embalmed bodies which are visited by millions of adoring followers every year. 3) If the US lied about Osama being dead, wouldn't it be simple enough for the real, alive Osama to just announce to the world via his broadcasts that the US are, in fact, lying? I don't really see what the US would gain about lying about Osama's death, other than some short-term PR, and the risk of the lie unravelling. I'm going to go ahead and call Occam's Razor on this one: the simplest answer is almost always the correct one.

@Stuart Unless Osama was already dead. Perhaps he was killed 10 years ago. And if he were alive, why would the real Osama announce it, he is far safer and more dangerous if people believe he is dead. As to the point of burial, do you really see America respecting their most hated man? I think not. Surely it would be in the world's best interest to keep the body and allow conclusive proof that it is really Osama that was killed.

@greensplash - it's possible that Osama's been dead a long time, and that the videos he's released in the past 10 years have been carefully doctored fakes, and that the various people captured by the US who claim to have seen Osama or taken orders from him were lying or were tortured into lying. But to my mind, it's just as easy to believe he's been alive, and was killed yesterday. Regarding the burial, as much as the US hated Osama, there's no value to them in NOT burying him in accordance to Muslim tradition - to do it any other way would invite the anger of millions of Muslims worldwide, including their own allies. Far better PR exercise to show how civilized they are by observing the rites of even their most hated enemy. The British did the same for Baron von Richthoven in WWI, despite him being their most feared and loathed adversary.

Anything the Americans are involved in is "fishy" at best. I agree with one of the statements above that Americans are the root cause of many problems all over the world. There is a good reason everyone hates the Americans. Do you think there involvement in the middle-east has anything to do with justice or doing humanity a favour? It is all about money and currently money is in oil. Those with "nice" agreements with the US are in good standing and those not - well they are at war with the US. Take the horrific human rights history of most Arabic nations (toward woman especially) and why don't you ever hear the US taking a stance? It is all about money.

@ganjaman The DNA tests mean nothing. Do you really believe they have convenient samples of what is confirmed to be Osama Bin Laden DNA to compare the new sample to. Where did they get these samples - no body has even seen him in 10 years. Anyway, the DNA tests can be faked so easily. Much better would be an actual body that can be examined by numerous international independent organisations.

Either: *Osama is still very much alive, and that this is just a coverup, or *Osama was killed years ago, hence no new videos received from him,and that the USA was waiting for the right moment to announce his death after concluding the economic benefit to the USA from afghanistan's natural resources, hence the reason to justify the expensive afghani military operations to the US public,or * Osama really was killed yesterday The question still remains: why dispose of his body at sea ,so very soon?

      Harold - 2011-05-02 11:14

Disposing of his body at sea is to prevent any attempt by fundamentalists to recover it and it stops a shrine from being erected and becoming yet another contentious spot on the planet. No I think it was a shrewd move and the DNA is being done to refute all allegations.

I love this: you say his death is fake, despite their being photographic evidence and eyewitnesses confirming it, and then you say Obama's birth certificate is also fake, despite their being evidence proving it's real, and eyewitnesses to back it up. Do you just selectively decide what is real and what is not, based on total bullshit? Normally people pay a lot of money for illegal drugs to help them reach that level of detachment, and here you are doing it all on your little own. Good for you, well done.

They've been looking for Osama for years, now they killed him and decided to ditch the body in the sea..? Something is not right about this, I dont think his dead yet...

  • Satan - 2011-05-02 13:55

They did not dump the body ...anyone for victory dinner at the white house??

  • mabsie - 2011-05-02 14:21

Thats what I am waiting for - the tests to confirm the buggers realy dead!!

  • Perfume - 2011-05-02 15:23

Is Osama not heavily guarded.....Let’s see, a military fight, where a helicopter went down, then a gun battle, then they went in picked up his body, then took him to a lab area did a scan to confirm it was him ,then they did a DNA test to re-confirm it was him, then they took him out to sea had a Muslim priest on hand did all the Muslim rituals and buried him at sea in a Muslim traditional burial with no Saudi Arabia demands no Saudi family request to see his body no debate on were his body will be put to rest. All of this done I less time than it took to get “Obama” birth certificate out of Hawaii, and finally while Osama was at war with the U.S he was building a mansion in Pakistan to relax out his days...hmmmmmm somethings seems way off with this, give me evidence please :)

Looks like a good script I wrote above, I still want evidence!!

Oh my gosh! Thats awful news! :( My heart goes out to the bin Laden Family! May he rest in peace! I feel for Osama bin Laden. He was just a confused man and he is also just human. I think that's terrible how he died :*( I pray that he'll find some peace. R.I.P OSAMA BIN LADEN

Just because I'm a Christian doesn't mean that I hate Muslims. In a way I can understand OSAMA BIN LADIN,.. I can understand the passion he had for his religion, he loved his religion so much that he even shed blood for his religion. That is a LOVE THAT NO ONE HERE CAN EVER IMAGINE to get close to. Although I differ, because I am a Christian, I do wish I had the courage to LIVE my faith out as STRONGLY AS HE LIVED HIS!!! A true Role-Model, that would do anything for his beliefs. He inspired so many, but at the same time he has caused so much suffering :*( But I forgive him because I know he is a beautiful loving soul. May jesus wash him in the name of god. You will always be in my thoughts, R.I.P OSAMA BIN LADIN !!!!!!
