US visa-free travel for Taiwanese

2012-10-02 21:53

Washington - The US has announced visa-free travel for people visiting from Taiwan.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano made the announcement on Tuesday. From 1December, Taiwan joins 36 countries whose nationals can travel to the US for tourism or business for 90 days without a visa.

It's not a privilege enjoyed by China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory.

The US decision comes during an election campaign where both candidates want to show they are tough on China. The announcement could be timed to demonstrate the Obama administration is sticking up for self-governing Taiwan, but it also comes after President Ma Ying-jeou calmed tensions with China.

The waiver is also viewed as a response to Taiwan lifting restrictions on US beef imports.

Why do they want to be tough on China? Why can't they be nice to China? Maybe the Chinese would appreciate that and be nice back. They don't really care, most of the US jobs have been exported there anyway!
