Crash site of fight MH17, a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 shot down over Ukraine.

Grabove - A top rebel leader in eastern Ukraine said insurgents were prepared to agree to a short ceasefire to allow a recovery operation for the Malaysian airliner that went down in territory they control.

Alexander Borodai, prime minister of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic", said that separatist forces would be ready to commit to a truce for several days, when asked by an AFP reporter.

Meanwhile, US officials have told AFP that analysts believe the plane was likely shot down by a surface-to-air missile, but it is unclear who fired the weapon.

They are reviewing data to determine whether the weapon was launched by pro-Moscow separatists in Ukraine, Russian troops across the border or Ukrainian government forces, said a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
