London - A memorial to the victims of the 2005 London underground bombings that killed 52 people has been defaced with graffiti on the anniversary of the attacks.

The stainless steel columns of the memorial in Hyde Park were daubed with slogans in red and black paint reading: "4 Innocent Muslims" and "Blair Lied Thousands Died", as shown in footage tweeted by London Live journalist James Banks.

Monday marks the ninth anniversary of the 7 July 2005 London bomb attacks by four Islamist suicide bombers on three underground trains and a bus.

The explosions were the most lethal in Britain since the 1988 Lockerbie airline bombing killed 270 people.

Survivors and families of the 7/7 victims attended a memorial service in the park after the graffiti had been cleaned from the memorial.

Police said the daubing was being treated as criminal damage.
