Vietnam in flag gaffe with China

2011-12-23 14:30

Beijing - Vietnam laid out all the stops this week for a visit from China's expected future leader - including flags with an extra star.

The gaffe came during a welcoming ceremony for Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping in Hanoi on Wednesday when children waved flags decorated with six stars.

China's flag has only five stars - one big star surrounded by four smaller ones.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Liu Weimin told reporters on Friday that Vietnam had told the Chinese Embassy in Hanoi that it was "a technical error".

Relations between the countries have been strained over competing claims in the potentially oil-rich South China Sea.

Vietnam and China signed co-operation agreements on youth affairs and health during Xi's visit.

The extra star on the Chinese flag is not a gaffe because it makes China bigger or more proud. It would be a gaffe if there are less stars on the Chinese flag and Vietnam would hear from Chinese response. http://www.eyedrd.org/2011/12/the-display-of-chinese-flag-with-6-stars-by-vietnamese-communists-is-not-a-mistake.html http://www.eyedrd.org/2011/12/chinese-vice-presidents-visit-greeted-with-a-wrong-chinese-flag-with-an-extra-star.html http://www.eyedrd.org/2011/10/an-extra-star-to-the-chinese-flag-by-the-vietnamese-authorities-stirs-public-outrage-and-indignation.html
