Hanoi - A Vietnamese judge has been forced to defend himself after a video was shared on social media appearing to show him napping during a trial, a media report said on Tuesday.

The video shows Nguyen Van Gioi, part of a three-judge panel on a land-use dispute, leaning back in his chair with his head tilted to the side for more than a minute.

"I only shut my eyes for several seconds," Gioi told Tuoi Tre newspaper. The judge insisted that he never nodded off, but acknowledged that he had been out late the night before.

Vietnamese raised objections on social media.

"It is unacceptable a judge dozing off," one Facebook user wrote. "How can he make a fair verdict in that case?"

Tra Vinh authorities said they were investigating the incident.

Gioi suggested that some journalists may be trying to smear him because of his strict policies regarding access to his court.

It was not known who posted the video.
