Wanted Nazi war crime suspect dies

2011-06-20 21:31

Vienna - Authorities say a suspected Nazi war criminal sought by Croatia has died at 98 in Austria.

They say Milivoj Asner died on Tuesday at a home for the aged in the southern city of Klagenfurt.

Austrian authorities had said Asner, a naturalised Austrian citizen, suffers from dementia and was not healthy enough to be extradited to Croatia for trial on alleged atrocities.

The Croatian-born retired police chief caused a stir three years ago when he was seen watching a soccer match in Klagenfurt. Critics contended Austria is sheltering Asner from Croatia, which wanted to try him for alleged World War II-era atrocities against Serbs, Jews and Gypsies.

The Jerusalem-based Nazi-hunting Simon Wiesenthal Centre on Monday called refusal by the Austria to extradite Asner - "a travesty of justice".
