'We will do our best to kill Prince Harry'

2012-09-10 09:00

Kandahar - The Taliban said on Monday it was determined to kill Britain's Prince Harry, serving in Afghanistan four years after his previous deployment was cut short over security concerns.

A militia spokesperson said the group had a "high-value plan" to attack the third in line to the British throne in southern province Helmand, one of the toughest battlefields in the 10-year war.

"We will do our best to kill Prince Harry and Britain's other troops based in Helmand," the spokesperson, who gave his name as Zabihullah Mujahid, said by telephone from an undisclosed location.

"It is not important for us to kidnap him. We will target him and we will kill him," he added.

The 27-year-old Apache helicopter pilot, who hit the headlines last month after he was photographed naked at a party in Las Vegas, will spend four months based at the heavily fortified Camp Bastion in Helmand.

"Whoever fights in our country is our enemy and we will do everything possible to kill him," said Mujahid.

Britain says Harry's squadron "will provide surveillance, deterrence and, when required, close combat attack capabilities as well as escort duties for other aircraft".

In 2008, the royal was hastily withdrawn from Afghanistan when a news blackout surrounding his deployment, on the ground directing aircraft in attacks on Taliban positions, was broken.

This time, however, the military has released photographs and video of him in Afghanistan from the start.

The Ministry of Defence said any risk "has been, and will continue to be, assessed".

get him out of there. It is ridiculous that so much money should be spent on security for one soldier. Very very expensive publicity stunt

He better get his "Royal Butt" out of there fast!!!

      Fidel - 2012-09-10 12:20

@Mike Nato will not allow Muslims to kill each other, but will willingly do it for them!

      atholl.canterbury - 2012-09-10 12:45

Leave him there : There is enough Opium in Afghanistan to get the entire Royal Family floating on Helium for life! That's what the British Army are 'defending'. The're defending the Royal family's (Western) Right ::} ... to force the Afghan Farmers to produce enough Opium ... to sell the Opium in the West. ... to realize enormous profits. ... to ignite other wars in the East. ... so that the East run to the West ... to purchase more weapons ... from Arms factories that are controlled by the Royal family.

      Fidel - 2012-09-10 13:03

You mean like the British Empire's opium wars with China. When China’s emperor protested the drugging of his people, the British sent warships to force its ports open.

      faerrab - 2012-09-10 10:41

Michelle - Harry is there to fight and kill "THEM" from the comfort of a Apache attack helicopter , do some research on the reasons for the Western wars in foreign countries and the damage and death done to "THEM", BTW you are paying so much for Petrol because of unecceassry sanctions against "THEM"

This is why his military movements should not be made public, not just for his own safety but for everyone else around him.

  • eugene.meyer1980 - 2012-09-10 11:34

Prince Harry rocks. When last did you hear of a royal fighting for their country on the battle field???

      Fidel - 2012-09-10 12:31

You mean the other country accross the pond? They wrote in the old days that it is sweet and fitting to die for one's country. But in modern war, there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying. You will die like a dog for no good reason. Ernest Hemmingway

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-09-10 13:01

Come on Harry, use your Apache for what it was designed and wipe them out. Be liberal on the air to surface missiles!

      ddviljoen - 2012-09-10 18:31

Actually his brother still serves as a rescue pilot and his uncle Prince Andrew served in the Falklands. British royal men have a proud tradition of military service.

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-10 20:50

It more like when did u hear of a prince stupid enuf to fite a losing battle.Fighting and dropping bombs frm the air is nothing but cowardly.Theres nt a dogs chance in hell he got the guts to fite on the ground!!!The Taliban r beating a highly sophisticated 'warmachine' with motorcycles and Kalishnikovs!beat that!

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-10 22:45

@andre vandeventer, prove ur bravado on the ground and well c how liberal u r??if thats the language u wanna talk!

  • louiseroger.higham - 2012-09-10 11:39

And these dudes think they going to heaven when they die to claim their virgins, why don't they go now if its that good and stop making threats on this earth?

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-10 19:00

Ur understanding of why muslims go for Jihad is highly destorted by the media.how does defending ur sovereign land have anything to do with dying to obtain 'virgins'.Trust me if the Taliban wanted virgins, there r plenty in Afghanistan!pls check ur opinions.

  • richard.fahrenfort - 2012-09-10 11:45

What kind of a dimwit announces plans of an assassination attempt to the media?! This must be a bad PR stunt to get people to like him again after that party in Vegas.

  • andrew.arnesen - 2012-09-10 11:54

Mmm, smell major BS... This is more likely a made-up report to whip up more hatred for the Taliban... It is like a car-hijacker phoning you the day before and saying "we're coming to get your car tomorrow". Yeah right!

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-09-10 12:23

      Fear factor prof.

  • Harold Chisimba - 2012-09-10 12:06

Why his granny allowed him to do this extremely precarious task.Does she think its like acting role in Hollywood movies?

      brendon.nel.7 - 2012-09-10 12:24

Tradtion harold. All royals have to serve in the military

      jurie.nel.3 - 2012-09-10 12:25

Harold, it must be the British stiff upper lip thing (which, by the way, I admire greatly). When the occasion demands it, a true Brit always comes up to scratch.

  • brian.ocinneide.7 - 2012-09-10 12:32

Why do you think the Brits sent him there? He is an embarrassment to the Royal Family.

  • jackey.moss - 2012-09-10 15:26

From one desert to another..Only difference is, here they want him dead not naked !!!!!

  • eric.martinsich - 2012-09-10 16:51

Who cares. He lives off tax payers money so he can go serve and die for his country

      diana.gill.18 - 2012-09-10 22:25

and tax payers will bury him with a smile.

      Antonie - 2013-01-23 08:52

The Royal Family has actually been making a profit for Britain for over a 100 years now. They give back way more then they take. The Royal family is allocated 40k 000 Pounds a year, while they rake in 200k 000 for the UK. Take some time to do a little bit of research chap.

  • walter.lebza - 2012-09-10 18:10

Alqaeda and taliban (fictions). A taliban hitman calls the media to announce his mission to kill british soldiers. Sound real does it?

  • sandor.l.varga - 2012-09-10 18:27

NATO should pull out from Afghanistan, let them sort out their own problem. Osama dead all ready, taliban not as strong anymore, Afghan Defence Force must be organized by now to face a taliban alone.

  • fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-10 19:21

To all those insulting and critisizing the Taliban on this issue,id like to ask what America wud say if the prince of Saudi Arabia had to go into America with attack helis and kill ppl there in the name of patriotism and bravado and the deceptive claim of creating stability there,at the expense of violating sovereign land.

  • fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-10 20:07

Prince or no prince doesnt give him moral highground to undermine the sovereignty and dignity ,cultures nd religions other than his own to satisfy his ego and to continue the Anglo Saxon war campaign, which is relentlessly never ending. If he is killed, thats the bed he made for himself!

      delish7564 - 2012-09-10 21:02

What's his ego got to do with anything? This is his job, apart from his Royal duties, and this is where he has been posted as any other serving officer would have been. It's not a question of ego, but one of duty. Whatever the rights or wrongs, he is a serving officer following orders in a very dangerous environment! @Eric He is only partly funded by the British taxpayer, he earns his salary from the Army like any other officer and, as shown by this posting, he is prepared to go wherever he is sent regardless of the danger.

      fort.horseman.7 - 2012-09-10 21:44

Whatever the terms and conditions of Britains Armed Forces, is not my point. All im sayng is his being glorified to kill civilians in a sovereign country, show ur glory by fighting on the ground. And dnt critisize the Taliban if Harry gets kild, since he himself is there to kill.

      phillipm.seopa - 2012-09-10 22:11

I knew that terrorist will be biased when they comment on this story.

  • diana.gill.18 - 2012-09-10 22:23

Might be a script for a blockbuster called "Taking on the royal fifth point".

  • ft.burhaak - 2012-09-10 22:59

@andre vandeventer.if u are suggesting tha Harry must b liberal in dropping bombs on Afghans frm the air, then i challenge u to come on the groundfite, and well show u how 'liberal' u are?if thats the language u wanna talk!!

  • glen.clark.37669 - 2012-09-11 08:19

These jerks that call themselves "religious" sure give all Muslims a bad name! And as for the rest of the comments, the British Royal males have always served in the Armed forces, it's not Harry's fault that there happens to be a war on, he's doing his duty like all the other servicemen! His uncle served in the Falklands war as well. They obviously don't shirk their duty to their Country
