Wife attacked with acid in bed
Kuala Lumpur - Malaysian police arrested a man suspected of killing his wife and possibly blinding his teenage daughter by splashing acid on them while they slept, an official and news reports said on Sunday.
The man is believed to have crept into his wife's separate bedroom early on Saturday and poured a bottle of acid over the two, who were in the same bed, said a district police official in northern Penang state.
Neighbours rushed them to a hospital after the 17-year-old daughter ran out screaming, the official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to make public statements. The man later gave himself up at a police station, the official said.
The wife died several hours later, while her daughter suffered burns on her face and would probably lose her sight, the national news agency Bernama and The Star newspaper reported. Officials at Penang's state hospital refused to comment.
Penang Police Chief Ayub Yaakob told The Star that the couple's relationship had deteriorated in recent years, and the man apparently meant to target his wife with the attack.
If charged with murder, the 52-year-old man could face a mandatory penalty of death by hanging.
