Woman gets life for burning husband
Hanoi - A court in the Mekong Delta sentenced the wife of an investigative journalist to life in prison for causing her husband's death by setting him on fire, local media reported on Friday.
Tran Thuy Lieu, aged 41, was sentenced after a one-day trial on Thursday in the southern province of Long An for the murder of Le Hoanh Hung, aged 50, in January 2011, the state-run newspaper Thanh Nien reported.
Hung, a journalist with the state-run daily Nguoi Lao Dong, was set on fire while he was sleeping. Lieu rushed him to hospital, but he died 10 days later.
She admitted setting the fire but said she had only meant to warn her husband, not kill him, the newspaper said.
But the court said Lieu had "vile motives" for killing Hung after the two quarrelled over her gambling debts and convicted her of murder.
Lieu's confession to the act a month after Hung's death ended speculation that the journalist was killed for his high-profile reporting on underworld thugs and corruption.
