Stockholm - A woman in Sweden has give birth for the first time after a uterus transplant, researchers at the University of Gothenburg said.

The boy was delivered prematurely but healthy by caesarean section in September after his 35-year-old mother received a womb donated by a 61-year-old family friend, they said.

"They are in good health, the both of them," said Liz Johannesson, a gynecology surgeon at the university. "... Their health is perfect."

The caesarean was ordered in the 32nd week of pregnancy after the mother developed high blood pressure and the baby showed signs of stress.

The boy weighed 1.78kg and was 40cm long at birth, normal measurements for a baby born at such a point in the pregnancy.

The birth came after more than 15 years of research.

"It was breathtaking," Johannesson said in describing the mood in the delivery room. "It was like having your own child actually. It was the same feeling. No one could really believe it."
