New Delhi - A tea plantation owner was lynched by workers in a dispute over wages in eastern India, news reports said Sunday.

A group of workers dragged out Rajesh Jhunjhunwala from the middle of negotiations at the estate in West Bengal state's Jalpaiguri district on Saturday evening, and stabbed and beat him to death, the Times of India reported.

The workers were demanding that the owner pay their back wages arrears immediately, but the owner expressed his inability to do so and they attacked, the report said.

The workers had not been paid for the past six months. Six workers had been arrested so far and the police was conducting more raids.

India is second only to China in production of tea.
