Yacht tragedy during race

2012-04-29 08:34

Los Angeles - Three crew members of a sailboat have been found dead and a fourth person is missing after their boat ran into trouble during a yacht race off the coasts of California and Mexico.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Henry Dunphy says rescuers were searching late on Saturday for the crew member after finding the bodies and debris from the boat near the Coronado Islands in Mexico.

He says the Coast Guard was investigating what may have happened to the boat.

The 11.3m Aegean was participating in the 200km Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race that began on Friday. Its home port is Redondo Beach.

The names of the dead were not released pending notification of next of kin.

Sad. Ran into a semi-submerged container perhaps?

Very sad....! Maybe run over by a ship!

That's a possibility too, Bob. However I would not think shipping en route to, or from, San Diego would pass near the Coronado Islands though without sailing directions for this coast I can't be sure of that.

I would be interested to know why they died.
