Paris - A major anti-terrorism rally scheduled to follow Friday prayers at Paris' Grand Mosque has been cancelled for security reasons, the head of the establishment announced on the eve of the event.

Rector Dalil Boubakeur said in a Thursday statement that discussions with police made it clear "that security conditions indispensable for organizing a public assembly are not fulfilled".

The rally, scheduled to start at 14:00 (13:00 GMT), should have been attended by Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo. On its website, the Grand Mosque had urged Muslims to attend to express "their deep attachment to Paris, to its diversity and to republican values."

The mosque was still expected to host a reading of a statement against terrorism and violence drafted by the French Council of the Muslim Faith, an umbrella group, and distributed to some 2,500 Muslim prayer sites throughout the country.

Paris suffered terrorist attacks at the hands of the so-called Islamic State on November 13, when Islamist suicide bombers and gunmen claimed the lives of 129 people, and injured 352.

The coordinated attacks came 10 months after another terrorist strike on the office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket, in which 20 died, including three assailants.
