Assailants take hostages in France

2016-07-26 11:26

Paris - A French security official says police have killed two attackers who used knives to seize hostages in a church in the northern city of Rouen.

The official said the identities of the attackers and motive for the attack on Tuesday are unclear.

French President Francois Hollande and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve were on their way to the scene, their offices said.

A priest has been killed, according to a police source, AFP reports.

It is unclear how many people are inside the church in the town of Sainte-Etienne-du-Rouvray.

National police would not comment on the incident.

It comes as France is on high alert after a Bastille Day attack that killed 84 people in Nice and a series of deadly attacks last year claimed by the Islamic State group.
