London - Police in Britain said on Wednesday they had arrested a 31-year-old man in London in connection with suspected "extremist Islamist terrorism".

"The man was detained by officers at a business address in south London" on Tuesday, London's Metropolitan Police said.

"The arrest is being linked to extremist Islamist terrorism," it said, adding that police had also searched a residential address in south London.

The man is suspected "of being involved in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism", the statement added.

Contacted by AFP, the police could not give further details.

Prime Minister David Cameron last month said that British security services had foiled seven terror attacks over the past year and the country's terror alert level has been set at "severe" since August 2014.

The interior ministry earlier this month said a record number of 315 people had been arrested on suspicion of terrorism between September 2014 and September 2015.

Several people have been arrested on suspicion of planning to fight in the ranks of the Islamic State group in Syria or after returning from the war zone.

A schizophrenic Muslim convert was sentenced to six years in prison on Monday for planning to join Somalia's Islamist Shebaab insurgent group.

A 22-year-old man was convicted earlier this month for planning a knife attack on police and military targets, and a 15-year-old boy was detained for a minimum of five years in October for plotting an Islamic State-inspired "massacre" during a WWI remembrance parade.
