London - Britain is to get its own version of the US president's Air Force One with the conversion of an official plane for Prime Minister David Cameron and other senior officials, the government said on Thursday.

The refitting of a Royal Air Force Airbus A330 Voyager plane, currently used for airborne refuelling, will reduce the cost of Cameron's official flights and allow more secure communications, his office said.

The plane would reportedly retain its air-force livery and have about 158 seats, including 58 business-class seats. It is also to be made available to the royal family.

Cameron's trips by plane currently cost an average of £6 700 per flying hour, while the dedicated plane would cost just £2 000 per hour and could still be used for refuelling when not required for official flights, the BBC quoted sources as saying.

Cameron is expected to formally announce his plans to use the aircraft in a speech to parliament on Monday.
