Temixco - Armed commandos assassinated the mayor of a southern Mexican city and two other people in her home, one day after she took office, state authorities said.

Gisela Mota Ocampo was mayor of Temixco, located 12km from state capital Cuernavaca, and a member of the leftist Democratic Revolucion Party.

"This is a challenge of the criminal elements. We will never yield," Morelos state governor Graco Ramirez said on Twitter.

Two of the attackers were reportedly killed by police as they fled the scene on Saturday, and three suspects were apprehended later in the surrounding vicinity, state police commissioner Alberto Capella said.

Mota took office on Friday, the same day that Morelos launched a joint operation of 600 state and federal agents to provide security in and around Cuernavaca, about 80km south of Mexico City.

Morelos is one of the states with the highest incidence of organised crime in Mexico, attributed to the presence of drug cartels.
