Moscow - Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday ordered his government to suspend flights to Egypt until investigators are able to determine the cause of last weekend's plane crash, state news agency TASS reported, citing his spokesperson.

Putin made the order upon the recommendation of Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee, his spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"Putin has ordered the government to work out mechanisms for realising the recommendations of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee and ensure the return of Russians to their homeland," Peskov was quoted as saying.

Earlier on Friday, the head of Russia's Federal Security Service, a successor agency of the Soviet KGB, called for Russia to suspend flights from Egypt.

"So long as we have not established the true causes of what happened, I think it would be reasonable to stop Russian aviation flights to Egypt," Alexander Bortnikov said in a speech at an extraordinary meeting of the anti-terrorism committee, TASS reported.

A Russian airliner exploded in mid-air and crashed in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula on Saturday, killing all 224 people on board.

An affiliate of the extremist group Islamic State claimed responsibility for the tragedy - the deadliest civil aviation disaster in Russian history.

The plane was heading from the popular Egyptian resort city of Sharm el-Sheikh to Russia's second-largest city, St Petersburg. Almost everyone aboard was Russian.
