Wiesbaden - The word for refugees - "Flüchtlinge" - has been voted Germany's word of the year 2015, the Society for the German Language (GfdS) announced on Friday.

The GfdS jury, in the western city of Wiesbaden, made the choice from around 2 500 suggestions of words that especially characterised German political, economic and social life during the year.

Germany has taken in around a million refugees over the course of the year, many from Syria, but also from Afghanistan, African countries and elsewhere.

The choice for 2014 was "Lichtgrenze" - light border - a concept that referred to a temporary display of thousands white balloons along where the Berlin Wall ran until it came down 25 years previously.
