Washington - US President Barack Obama has called on all Americans to do their part to prevent gun violence and on lawmakers to make it harder for criminals to get guns, following a shooting that left 14 people dead in California.

"It's important for all of us, including our legislators, to see what we can do to be sure that when individuals decide they want to do someone harm, we make it harder for them to do it, because right now it's just too easy," he says.

Obama made the remarks after meeting with his national security team and speaking with the mayor of San Bernardino, where the mass shooting took place.

He cautioned that the motive for the shooting remained unclear and vowed to get to the bottom of what he said could be terrorism or workplace violence.

"We do not yet know why this terrible event occurred," Obama said.

He added that it would take time to uncover the extent of the shooters' plans and their motives.
