Istanbul - Four alleged members of the Islamic State extremist group were killed in a shoot-out with Turkish security forces in the south of the country, before the G20 summit was to start Sunday.

The incident o Saturday night took place in Gaziantep province near the border with Syria, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported, citing security sources.

Suspected militants in two vehicles refused an order to stop by soldiers on patrol. Instead they shot at the troops, who returned fire, killing the occupants of one car. The other vehicle escaped.

Turkey has stepped up raids on Islamic State cells inside the country in recent weeks, detaining dozens of alleged militants. No trials have been reported.

The extremist group is blamed for twin suicide attacks in Ankara last month which killed 100 people at a peace rally, and for a suicide bombing in southern Turkey in July which killed 34 at a pro-Kurdish gathering. Islamic State has not taken responsibility.

Turkey is employing at least 12 000 security forces during the G20 summit in the southern Antalya province, taking place after terrorist attacks in Paris, which killed 129 people and has been claimed by Islamic State.
