New York - A spokesperson says the United Nations is assessing security in the wake of an explosion on Saturday night in New York's Chelsea district as the organisation prepares to host world leaders arriving for the General Assembly.

The blast, which New York Governor Andrew Cuomo described as "an act of terror, but not linked to international terrorism", wounded 29 people. They have since been discharged from hospital.

Cuomo said an extra 1 000 state police and National Guard would deploy to airports, bus terminals and subway stations on Monday to reassure New Yorkers returning to work after the Manhattan blast that the city is "up and running".

United Nations spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Sunday that security inside the UN complex "is being assessed on a constant basis".

He pointed out that security outside the UN is the responsibility of the host country.

"We receive great co-operation and appreciate the support from the federal authorities and the NYPD throughout the year, and especially during the General Assembly to keep staff, delegates and visitors safe," Dujarric said.
