Philadelphia - A video has been doing the rounds on social media of a group of US firefighters at Penn State University rescuing a helpless canine that had been trapped for two days in snowy conditions after falling through a sinkhole.

The 7-year old dog named Skye disappeared on Monday night while out for a walk with her owners, Pet Recovery of Centre County said on Wednesday.

After a two-day search and many calls for help on social media, Skye’s owners eventually located her on Wednesday after they heard her barking from inside the hole.

Alpha Fire Company, the rescue service that was called to the scene, said a rescue team was sent out to retrieve Skye from her predicament.

“The dog was found to be in a hole approximately 15 feet deep but appeared to be in good health,” the company said on its Facebook page.

“Confined space operations began and Assistant Chief Harris was sent down to retrieve the dog. Chief Harris rigged up a dog harness out of anchor straps and the dog was carefully pulled out of the hole.

“Both the dog and the owner were very happy to be reunited.”

Pet Recovery of Centre County described the rescue as a “miracle”.

“Our prayers have been answered and we are so grateful to everyone who played a role in bringing this girl home safe,” the group said on its Facebook page on Wednesday.

“Welcome home to Skye! What a miracle.”
