Cape Town - The H1N1 virus has claimed its first victim in the country, after the death of a University of Stellenbosch student who contracted the flu strain.

The 22-year-old student died on July 28 - laboratory tests confirmed the diagnosis on Monday. The student had been admitted to the Stellenbosch Medi-Clinic with pneumonia.

MEC for health in the Western Cape, Theuns Botha, confirmed the death of Ruan Muller, 22, and extended his condolences to the family.

Botha described Muller's death as "unusual and the first that we know of in SA".

Muller was a polymer and textile sciences student.
