Washington - A tsunami warning has been lifted for the entire western coast of the United States following a strong earthquake that struck late on Tuesday 140km off the shore of California, the West Coast Tsunami Warning Centre said.
"The tsunami warning and watch status is cancelled for California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia (Canada) and Alaska," the centre said in a statement.
The earthquake measured 7.4 degrees on the open Richter scale, the centre said, striking under the Pacific Ocean 140km northwest of Eureka, California, and 480km northwest of San Francisco.
There were no reports of damage or injuries from the quake, according to CNN, but in the California town of Crescent City there were some "limited evacuations," the news service said without indicating the nature of the threat there.
A major earthquake off the southern shore of Indonesia on December 26 triggered tsunamis that killed about 217 000 people in 11 countries.
