We take a look at some of TV's most kickass female characters, in no particular order.

There is no doubt that there is a rise in strong female leads (We see you, Shonda Rhimes).

But who did we have before the brilliant Annalise Keating and fierce Daenerys Targaryen?

1. Buffy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Played by Sarah Michelle Gellar

Perhaps one of the strongest female characters on TV, Buffy was the epitome of a kickass. Got a vampire problem? She's got you covered - all while dealing with the trials and tribulations of high school.

2. Lorelai Gilmore, The Gilmore Girls

Played by Lauren Graham

Because not all superheros wear capes. As a single mother, Lorelei is set on improving life for both her daughter and herself. A self-made woman, Lorelai is also clever, sharp with the right dose of witty banter.

3. Joan Clayton, Girlfriends

Played by Tracee Ellis Ross

Although she was a little quirky, you couldn't help but root for Joan. She was driven and resilient in her pursuit of success, love and personal fulfillment - a heroine every millennial needs!

4. Claire Huxtable, The Cosby Show

Played by Phylicia Rashad

There's a reason Claire Huxtable will always be one of the best TV moms ever. Not only did she work hard at her job as a lawyer, she still had ample time for her five children!

5. Kimberly Hart and Trini Kwan, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Played by Amy Jo Johnson and Thuy Trang

Go, go, power rangers! The pink and yellow power rangers taught us that girls can just be as kickass as their male counterparts - a lesson that the younger generations could do with.

6. Ntsiki Lukhele , Generations

Played by Pamela Nomvete

The original Generations introduced us to Ntsiki, one of the baddest women in SA television history. Although her power-hungry stunts raised a few eyebrows, there is no doubt that it made for good television.

7. Cherel De Villiers, Isidingo

Played by Michelle Botes

Speaking of villains, Cherel was one character that SA viewers loved to hate. A perfect concoction of deceit and manipulation, Cherel had you on the edge of your seat.

8. Lara Croft , Tomb raider

Played by Angelina Jolie

The cave-hopping and gun-toting Lara is breaking bad defined. Seriously.

9. Trinity, The Matrix

Played by Carrie-Ann Moss

Brilliant. That's one way to describe Trinity. Tech savvy, smart, and well-versed in the martial arts, she was a total kickass. Goals.

10. Clover, Sam and Alex, Totally Spies

Voiced by Andrea Taylor, Jennifer Hale and Katie Griffin

Who says all kickass female characters have to be human?!
