10 new TV series!

Our TV blogger has picked 10 new series she can’t wait to see. Take a look at her list and watch the trailers here.

Am I the only one . . . who cannot resist checking to see which series are starting in America to find out what will be coming our way? There are quite a lot of shows that sound promising so I’ve made a list of the 10 I think we should look out for, and DStv has confirmed they have bought nine on this list. I haven’t included any reality shows and stuck to series starting now in America. Check out the list below and see what you think; trailers have been included to whet your appetite. The one I hope will be a hit: Under the Dome

  • Stephen King books either translate to movies or TV brilliantly or really badly; there seems to be no middle ground. But I have very high hopes for this one -- serious high hopes. The book was amazing and the series is produced by Steven Spielberg. That’s a good combination, right?
  • The story: The small town of Chester’s Mill is suddenly enclosed in an invisible dome isolating it from the outside world and the townsfolk have no idea why (sounds like The Simpsons movie but doubt they will be digging their way out). And the town has interesting people with secrets, including a creepy serial-killer-in-the-making teenager and a handsome stranger who is up to something, which become far more interesting than what has caused the dome.
  • Who’s in it: Britt Robertson (The Secret Circle) and Rachelle Lefevre (from the first two Twilight movies)
  • When will we see it: It will be on DStv from 26 July. And I am really keen to pre-order the special edition Blu-ray.

The one I think will be the coolest: The Bridge
  • It’s a remake of a successful Scandinavian TV series and sounds like it could be the next The Killing, and the executive producer of Homeland is behind it. It’s all gritty and stuff, and I’m intrigued.
  • The story: Two detectives, one from America and the other from Mexico, must work together after a body is found on a bridge that is part of the border between the two countries. There’s a serial killer, corruption and all sorts of darkness going on.
  • Who’s in it: Diane Kruger (yes, she’s ventured from movies to TV!)
  • When will we see it: It will air from 11 July on FOXCrime channel 126, one of DStv’s new channels

The one that sounds like the new Sopranos: Ray Donovan
  • It stars movie star Liev Schreiber who plays a fixer. We already have an amazing one on TV but this one also sounds good so Olivia Pope will be kind and make a little room for him. But it sounds more similar to The Sopranos than The Fixer.
  • The story: He’s a moody fixer who sorts out problems for the rich and famous (so sports and movie stars not Olivia’s political people) in Los Angeles and now also has to deal with his crazy dad being released from prison, his troubled brothers and his own family.
  • Who’s in it? It also stars Angelina Jolie’s daddy, Jon Voight, and Elliott Gould (Ocean’s Eleven)
  • When will we see it? It will premiere on M-Net on 6 August.

The one that sounds fun: Devious Maids
  • This is from Marc Cherry who created Desperate Housewives, and Eva Longoria who was in Desperate Housewives, so it should at least be intriguing, right? Let’s hope so. It’s based on a Mexican telenovella and sounds like it will be deliciously wicked.
  • The story: Five maids working in the homes of the rich and famous in Beverly Hills see and hear all sorts of things. The series starts when one maid is murdered, leaving behind a puzzling note, and a new maid arrives who has her own agenda. It’s very much like Desperate Housewives so it should be fun.
  • Who’s in it?Roselyn Sanchez (Without a Trace), Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty), Dania Ramirez (Heroes), Judy Reyes (Scrubs) and Susan Lucci (All My Children)
  • When will we see it? We’ll see it on DStv soon.

The one that will make me weep: The Fosters
  • I love a good family drama filled with tearful moments and this one sounds promising. It’s produced by Jennifer Lopez and seems to have a similar feel to The Secret Life of an American Teenager. Reviews have been mixed but it sounds like a solid family drama worth giving a chance
  • The story: A gay interracial married couple with a mix of biological, adopted and foster kids open their home to a troubled teen.
  • Who’s in it? Teri Polo of the Meet the Parents movies
  • When will we see it? DStv hasn’t confirmed yet which channel or day it will air on.

The one with the pretty people: Graceland
  • Could it work? I have my doubts about this one as it sounds like Melrose Place the crime-fighter version. But I will give it a go as it could be fun.
  • The story: A group of undercover agents all live in the same house on the beach. It’s a gorgeous house that was confiscated in a crime bust that the agents refer to as Graceland. The story begins when a new undercover agent moves in and he seems to be up to something.
  • Who’s in it? Daniel Sunjata from Rescue Me and Grey’s Anatomy and Vanessa Ferlito of CSI: New York
  • When will we see it? DStv has bought it but has no details for us yet.

The one I fear I won’t like: Mistresses
  • I adore Alyssa Milano and have been looking forward to this remake of the successful Brit series of the same name. But it sounds like it will be far too soapie-like and not in a good way. But I have hope so that’s why it’s on the list.
  • The story: Four women friends deal with issues, one is struggling to have a baby with her husband, one is playing the field, one is a psychiatrist having an affair with a dying patient and one is recovering after the death of her husband.
  • Who’s in it? It also stars Yunjin Kim of Lost and Jason George of Grey’s Anatomy
  • When will we see it? It will air on one of the DStv channels soon.

The one that sounds fun: Camp
  • I am a fan of Rachel Griffiths of Brothers & Sisters and it’s good to hear she will be back on our screens so this sitcom-style series had better deliver, for her sake. It’s created by the makers of Friday Night Lights and Gossip Girl, so I have high hopes.
  • The story: The goings-on and life at a lakeside summer camp run by a newly divorced woman as we get to know the counsellors, the kids and the parents.
  • Who’s in it? Rachel and other Australian actors, as the series was filmed Down Under
  • When will we see it? DStv has bought it but has no details for us yet.

The one that could become my guilty pleasure: King & Maxwell
  • Crime investigation shows do well on TV; most of us like an evening with a CSI or similar which is a good sign for this show. And I have a serious soft spot for mismatched partners with humour so, King & Maxwell, please be good.
  • The story: Sean King and Michelle Maxwell are former Secret Service agents who team up to form a private investigation agency. It’s based on a book by David Balducci.
  • Who’s in it?Jon Tenney of The Closer, Rebecca Romijn of X-Men and Ryan Hurst of Sons of Anarchy
  • When will we see it? We’ll see it soon on one of the DStv channels.

The one I am super excited about: Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.EL.D
  • It’s made by Joss Whedon, the guy who gave us TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly, and big movie of 2012 The Avengers so, of course, it’s going to work!
  • The story: Okay, we saw Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg, who is still the husband from The New Adventures of Old Christine to me) apparently die in The Avengers, but it seems he is still alive and the star of this show. He leads the S.H.I.E.L.D team that is trying to find superhuman, superheroes in the world – sort of like Heroes.
  • Who’s in it? Ming-Na Wen from ER is a S.H.I.E.L.D agent and J August Richards from Angel plays some sort of superhero
  • When will we see it? It starts in America in September and DStv has not said yet if it will buy it but I think we can safely assume it will. I’ll let you know the moment it’s confirmed.
