10 ways to get a spring in your step!

Spring has sprung so there’s no better time to get that winter dreariness out of your system and reclaim that spring in your step!

As the flowers begin to bloom and the bitterly cold bite slips away, welcome the season of rejuvenation by: 1. Re-doing. Spring is a time of organising your life so how about going back to a project you started but haven’t finished. Nothing quite beats the feeling of conquering what you set your mind to, even if it’s just finishing the legwarmers you began to knit at the beginning of winter or the book you couldn’t wait to start reading but then left forgotten on a dusty shelf.

2Explore. Get a little kick out of life by rediscovering the spots in your town  you forgot about or the little nooks and crannies you never got around to exploring. It’s a cheap alternative to travelling and provides the simple pleasures that make life worth living.
3. Detox. Most of us face an increased appetite during the winter months and many of us need to get back into shape for summer. The month of spring is the perfect time to get all your ducks in a row with regard to a healthy and nutritious diet. Up your water intake, get the vitamins you need for your recommended daily allowance and cut out the fast foods. Going back to the drawing board and keeping things healthy and simple will leave you feeling good! Schedule a checkup with your GP and get talking about what you can do to improve your quality of life.
4. Stand up straight. Self-confidence is so essential to your overall well-being. And it begins with feeling good about your body. After covering up for months with warm clothing and keeping cosy under tons of blankies, it’s time to de-layer and exercise away the sluggishness in anticipation of the upcoming summer that will soon be knocking at your door. A few yoga poses can take your self-esteem to the next level; it’s the perfect pick-me-up to turn any frown upside down.
5. Sleep. Don’t underestimate the power of a good night’s rest or a much-needed nap. They provide a great energy boost and fabulous mood enhancement.

6. Exercise. Even if you’re not a fan of getting up and about, your body will be grateful for the benefits it will receive in the future. So, start slow with a few steps; walk instead of taking the lift, park your car a little further away from the mall, and from there you can keep moving forward by adding an extra step to your exercise regime every day.
7. Spring-clean. De-clutter, organise and throw out what you don’t need. Let go of all the physical and emotional baggage in your life. It weighs you down and creates unnecessary guilt. Giving what you no longer want or have a need for to charity is also a great way to help others. And once you’re done you can do some guilt-free redecorating for a fresh new feel; a little change is always good.
8. Find new opportunities. Re-asses where you are in your life. After some reflection, if you feel you need a new job/activity/project then now would be a great time to get a plan in motion to achieve your dreams. Don’t wait for the new year to focus on your goals. Focus on them now and set small goals in place so you can achieve them by the beginning of the new year. Dust off your CV, apply for that course before the deadline closes or draw up that business plan for the bakery you’ve always had in mind.
9. Donate. Donate your old clothes to a charity of your choice, or, better yet, donate your free time to help others. Simply reading a book to a sick child at a hospital provides a priceless gift of love that will go a long way towards making a difference to someone else. Remember, as retired American footballer Kalu Kalu said, “The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy.
10. Learn something new. It’s a new season. It’s the beginning of a new quarter of the year. It’s a great time to begin something new, something that provides a little “me-time”, perhaps something you’ve set your sights on like an art/pastry/photography course . . .

There you go . . . Now hop along because summer will be here before you know it!
