11 Things you won’t learn in school

There are a lot of things in life school can’t teach you about . . . like don’t diss nerds, you may end up working for one! Bestselling author Charles Sykes came up with these 11 rules – to which we’ve added a few thoughts of our own.

Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!

We say: As American TV Host Dennis Wholey said, “Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are a good person is a little like expecting a bull not to attack you because you are a vegetarian.” Life isn’t fair but that’s no reason to get down – make the most of whatever gets thrown your way! Good or bad.

Rule 2: The world doesn't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

We say: Yes, you need to earn the respect of others, but you have to believe in yourself first. YOU are the only one in charge of your self-esteem. Remember, fake it till you make it!

Rule 3: You will NOT make R500 000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a Ferrari until you earn both.

We say: Inventor Thomas Edison said, “Success is 10 per cent inspiration and 90 per cent perspiration.” The truth is success takes hard work and time. The harder you work, the luckier you’ll get.

Rule 4: If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

We say: It’s not that all bosses are mean, they just expect a lot more from you than your teachers do. And unlike your teachers, if you’re not performing well; they’ll have no trouble getting rid of you!

Rule 5: Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

We say: A job’s a job! Take whatever you can get, especially with the economy the way it is at the moment, and work your way up.

Rule 6: If you mess up it’s not your parents' fault. So don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

We say: A mistake is only a tragedy if you learn nothing from it. Look at what happened, and why, and then work on fixing it.

Rule 7: Before you were born your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were.

We say: Your parents are your rock. They’re always there for you, no matter what. Treat them like the treasure that they are.

Rule 8: Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

We say: See rule 1!

Rule 9: Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get four long holidays a year and employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

We say: Think of weekends as mini-holidays, and learn to make the most of every moment you have.

Rule 10: TV is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

We say: Remember, life doesn’t have to be the same as the stuff you see in the movies to be fun.

Rule 11: Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.

We say: Hug a nerd today or if you are a nerd yourself, embrace it. There are good times ahead for you!
