There’s still a few days left before school starts. Check out our list of boredom busters.

1. TAKE A HIKE!

Lions Head and Signal Hill

Lions Head and Signal Hill

The outdoors always makes you feel better, and getting exercise is the first step to getting a body like Serena van der Woodsen’s!

Hey YOU’s top walking trails:

Cape Town

Cecilia Forest. A shady, relatively easy two-hour hike in the Constantia Nek area.

Lion’s Head. One of the most popular hikes in Cape Town, this is a little more strenuous than Cecilia Forest but the view makes it all worth it.

Durban

Beachfront Promenade. Durban is renowned for its spectacular beaches so why not enjoy them on this easy 6 km walk?

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve. The Molweni Trail is a 6-km walk and at the bottom of the kloof you’ll find rock pools to swim in.

Joburg

Zoo Lake. For a quiet stroll around the lake or in the park surrounding it, Zoo Lake is a firm favourite.

Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens, Roodepoort. Take the two-hour hike to the top of the waterfall and enjoy the spectacular views.

If you don’t live near any of these trails, check out sahikes.co.za for a route near you.

Safety first! Remember, you’ll be exposed to the elements so you need to look after yourself. Pack plenty of water and sunblock and some snacks such as dried fruit and nuts. Never go alone, always take a fully charged cellphone, stick to the paths and make sure someone at home knows where you are at all times.

2. BECOME A BOOKWORM

Old favourites worthy of a reread:

Harry Potter series – JK Rowling

Twilight series – Stephenie Meyer

The Hunger Games trilogy – Suzanne Collins

Our top five holiday reads

- His Dark Materials trilogy – Phillip Pullman. A young girl in a parallel universe sets out to save her friend from child snatchers. The first book was turned into the movie The Golden Compass with Daniel Craig.

- The Mortal Instruments series – Cassandra Clare. A New York teen finds out she’s a Shadowhunter – a human descended from angels who must protect ordinary people from monsters and vampires. A film based on the first book starring Lily Collins is coming out later this year.

- Warm Bodies – Isaac Marion. A zombie develops feelings for a human in this in this twist on Romeo and Juliet. Nicholas Hoult stars in the movie version.

- Pure – Julianna Baggott. The first book in a trilogy set in a post-apocalyptic world where people have been fused with objects. The heroine has a doll’s head instead of a right hand.

- Delirium – Lauren Oliver – In an alternate reality an oppressive government believes love is a disease that should be exterminated. Emma Roberts is set to star in a TV series based on the trilogy.

3. SHAKE IT UP

5. GROW THOSE GREEN FINGERS

Start a veggie/herb garden. Find space in the garden (it’s a good idea to check with your folks first), and make sure the soil isn’t too sandy (maybe invest in some fertiliser). Then go to your local nursery and ask what steps you need to take. For less than R20 you could be eating your own tomatoes in about three months!

6. PRACTISE UBUNTU (AND GET THE PERKS!)

- Your mom probably isn’t on holiday too so offer to cook dinner for the family. She might be so pleased she lets you stay out an hour later!

- Offer to cut your neighbour’s lawn or clean their pool. They might let you host a cricket game or invite you for a swim.

- Volunteer at the local animal shelter. Is there a better perk than puppy breath?
