3 Delicious ways with guavas

Winter means enjoying delicious comfort food such as stewed guavas which go down a treat at family festivities. Not only does this fruit deliver in taste but it’s also healthy and high in vitamin C.

1. Stewed guavas

Peel 8-10 guavas, cut into quarters and place in a deep saucepan. Add 375 ml (1½ c) sugar, 1 star anise, 1 stick cinnamon and 2 whole cardamom pods. Pour in water just to cover, and simmer on low to medium heat until the guavas are soft and the water becomes syrupy. Serve warm with custard.

These guava tarts are a perfect tea time treat! These guava tarts are a perfect tea time treat! Pre-heat an oven to 200 °C and grease a muffin pan. Roll out a roll of puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and cut out circles to fit in each muffin cup, covering the sides too. Prick lightly with a fork. Cut 6 peeled guavas in half, place each half in a muffin cup, sprinkle with brown sugar and bake for 15-20 minutes until the pastry is cooked. Serve with custard or whipped cream.

3.  Guava-glazed pork

Pre-heat an oven to 200 °C. Peel and core 4-6 guavas and place in a blender. Add 30 ml (2 T) honey, 30 ml (2 T) soy sauce and 5 ml (1 t) Chinese five-spice, and blend well. Season 4-6 pork chops with pepper and pour the guava sauce over. Leave to marinade in an ovenproof dish for 30 minutes. Bake for 15-20 minutes in the oven or until cooked and golden. Serve with mash and seasonal vegetables.
