Music blogger Ian Bredenkamp has five songs for the week ahead and it’s Heritage Day this week so he’s highlighting five great South African songs that make us proud to live in this country.

MONDAY

Mango Groove – Special Star.

The penny whistle is this hit is unmistakably South African. I saw them live only once opening for the Rolling Stones.

TUESDAY

Johnny Clegg – Spirit of the Great Heart

Is there any other star as uniquely “ours” as Johnny Clegg? He’s one of the most down-to-earth musicians I’ve ever interviewed.

WEDNESDAY

Abdullah Ibrahim – Manenberg

Formerly known as Dollar Brand, Abdullah Ibrahim is one of the elder Statesmen of SA Jazz and this is one of his most le hits.

THURSDAY

Miriam Makeba – Pata Pata

May she Rest in Peace. The wonderful Miriam Makeba will always be a real shining star.

FRIDAY

Sipho Hotstix Mabuse – Burnout

I love the energy of this song, Burnout. It reminds me of the turning point in our democracy.
