Each week our music blogger Ian Bredenkamp gives you five songs to keep you inspired during the week.

Monday

It’s the start of a new week. You need a pick-me-up. Something to set the tone and give you the vooma to push through the week. Remember the 1986 hit Manic Mondayby The Bangles? It was the follow-up to the wildly successful Walk Like an Egyptian. The song was originally written as a duet by Prince, who later offered his song to the all-girl band.

Tuesday

Italian star Patrizio Buanne slipped into South Africa this week to record songs with BlackByrd’s Tarryn Lamb and Lianie May – he’s back in September for concerts in Joburg. The ladies love his charming and dashing good looks … enjoy this version of That’s Amore.

Wednesday

It’s the third day of the week. You’ll need something new and fun. Something fresh and happy that makes you smile. This song by Naughty Boy featuring Sam Smith is all over the radio and the dance floor. It’s called La La La and is the debut single by UK-born Shahid Khan (Naught Boy is his stage name) and has gone to #1 around the world.

Thursdays

Thursdays are always old school days. It’s the day we look back into the old record box and pull out something filled with memories of happy days. Let’s take you back now to 1983 with Drop the Pilot by Joan Armatrading.

Friday anthem

If Thursdays are about Old School, then Fridays are about party songs. Its weekend! Time to kick off your shoes and forget about your boss. So here’s a Friday song for you … but with a cool South African twist. Dance Sum More propelled Mango Groove into the limelight  … and even saw them share a stage with the Rolling Stones.
