Wouldn’t it be nice to have a little bundle of fur to welcome you home from school? Pets make wonderful friends, and scientists have found in various studies that there are many benefits to keeping a pet.

But before you head for the pet shop ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Are you ready for a lifelong responsibility? A pet isn’t just something that satisfies your need for a friend; you must be prepared to care for it all its life.
  2. Are you allowed to have a pet where you live? If you live in a small flat it’s not a good idea to get a big dog. Make sure your house is suitable for a pet. For example, is there a cat flap or accessible window you can leave open for your feline?
  3. Who’ll feed your pet and take it for walks? If you’re away from home often you should arrange beforehand with your brother, sister, parents or a friend to take care of it – even if it’s for just one night.
  4. Are you going to teach your pet toilet manners? Puppies and kittens must be taught how and where to do their business. If you have to clean up after your dog invest in a poop scoop.
  5. Are you prepared to bath your pet, brush it and also care for it when it’s sick? Like people, animals should live in hygienic conditions and it’s your job to make sure they’re hygienic. Cats will take care of themselves in this regard if they have access to enough sand.
