Many of us can still remember how stressful school exams can be so it’s easy to imagine how your child must feel going through the same thing. Here are seven ways to help them limit their stress during exams, which can also affect exam results and their self-esteem.

Many of us can still remember how stressful school exams can be so it’s easy to imagine how your child must feel going through the same thing. Here are seven ways to help them limit their stress during exams, which can also affect exam results and their self-esteem:

1. Make home life as calm and pleasant as possible.

2. Don’t review the exam paper they did that day in too much detail as it achieves nothing and could cause stress for the child to review “what ifs” about something they can do nothing about.

3. An exercise routine, perhaps including the whole family, can help relieve tension.

4. A good diet and lots of sleep is vital during exam time. Include lots of lean protein such as fish and dark green veggies during this time. Ensure they drink lots of water and get eight to 10 hours of sleep. They should close their books and log off social media or switch off the TV at least half an hour before bedtime to unwind. For older children, limit their caffeine intake during this time.

5. Help them come up with positive and stress management statements.

For example:

“I know I can try some relaxation breathing if I become anxious.”

“My anxiety isn’t permanent.”

“Many students feel worried they might fail. I’m not alone.”

6. Encourage deep breathing when they feel particularly anxious.

7. Make sure they know they can talk to you if they’re worried they haven’t done enough studying. Reassure them that even if they don’t achieve top marks it’s not the end of the world.
