A baby girl was found lying in Russian woodland, covered in ants, after a passerby heard her crying.

The abandoned baby, estimated to be just 3 days old, was discovered lying on a pile of leaves and covered in bites when a man – who had taken a short cut through the woods on his way to work – heard her cries.

"It was clear that the child had been abandoned and there was no one else in sight, so [the person who found her] picked her up and called for an ambulance," a police spokesperson said.

The newborn baby still had an umbilical cord attached to her would not have survived for much longer had she not been rescued.

The little girl is being treated at a hospital in Chelyabinsk in Russia and is expected to make a full recovery. Police are trying to track down her birth parents.
