Have you developed a fear of flying since last year’s series of airline accidents and the accident last week in Taiwan? Don’t stress, a new app will help you determine your chances of crashing.

Have you developed a fear of flying since last year’s series of airline accidents and the accident last week in Taiwan? This new app might help calm your fears -- or not.

The developers of Am I Going Down allege they can accurately predict the chances of a specific flight crashing. Just key in the name of the airport you’re flying from and the one you’re flying to, the name of the airline and the type of aircraft – and there you have it. The app informs you of how great the risk is your flight will crash.

Naturally there’s no scientific proof the app is accurate or could ever be. Nic Jones, the creator of the app, says he created it only to show how slight the chance of crashing is and that flying is in fact very safe.

Based on the parameters, a flight in a Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 between Kuala Lumpur and Beijing is one of the “most dangerous” flights, with a one-in-a-million chance of crashing. That’s the route taken by the missing Flight MH370.

A recent study at Chapman University in California, America, showed that 43 per

cent of respondents were “slightly” afraid of flying and nine percent were too afraid to fly at all.

Perhaps the app will succeed in its purpose and convince these people that flying – despite the accidents – is still regarded as the safest way to travel.

The app is available for iPhone:
