Amanda Bynes' parents have reportedly obtained a conservatorship order after claiming she has been buying extravagant gifts for strangers.

Yesterday the 28-year-old's involuntary psychiatric hold was extended by 30 days and she remains at a hospital in Pasadena, California. She was originally made the subject of a 5150 hold - used when people are deemed a danger to themselves or others - after her behaviour spiralled out of control following a DUI arrest last month.

Her parents Lynn and Rick are now said to have obtained a conservatorship, meaning they are in charge of their daughter's affairs. According to TMZ, Lynn and Rick claim Amanda had been splashing "alarming amounts" on jewellery for people she doesn't even know.

The website claims to have seen legal documents in while the pair admit worrying their daughter poses a "substantial risk" to herself and others. Included is a list of her worrying behaviour, such as her recent arrest and behaviour in New York City, where she was accused of shoplifting and being abusive.

Amanda's financial details were also included in the documents, with her parents showing how fast she is getting through her $5,7 million (R61,9 million) net-worth. TMZ suggests the star has been blowing money on high-end jewellery, which she then gifts to random people outside the stores.

At the moment it's not known how long the conservatorship order will be in place, with RadarOnline reporting it was filed on October 22.

How long Amanda will be treated also remains unclear, with various reports suggesting she could need care for anywhere between two and 12 months.

Before her DUI arrest, the former Nickelodeon star was thought to be doing well. She displayed erratic behaviour last year, culminating in her being placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold after she set a fire in a stranger's driveway. Her parents obtained a conservatorship then too and she was released into rehab, before being allowed into their care.

She enrolled on a course at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Irvine, California, but things fell apart following her DUI arrest in September.
