Moments after the nominations were announced for mayor of the Johannesburg City Council, an ANC councillor had collapsed and later died.

Nonhlanhla Mthembu was seen being removed from the chambers just as the nominations had been called.

The ANC confirmed her death in a statement issued a few hours later.

Mthembu, fondly known as Black Diamond and Stompi, had just celebrated her 50th birthday.

"[She] was an activist at heart, and a longstanding member of the ANC," the party said.

"She had devoted her life to serving her community. She was a Johannesburg councilor in the 2011 - 2016 term of office, and was re-elected to serve for another five years.

The cause of her death is not yet known.

We send our deepest condolences to Cde Mthembu’s family, friends, comrades and colleagues. May her soul rest in eternal peace."

The ANC’s Parks Tau and the DA’s Herman Mashaba were nominated for the position of mayor of Johannesburg.
