A Durban restaurant owner claims two ANCYL members held two parties they said were official engagements and left without paying the R83 000 bill

, the Sunday Independent reported.

A restaurant director from the Velvet Lounge in Durban, who asked not to be named, told the newspaper that Emmanuel Bongumasa Gumede and Themba Dlomo had approached him, asking him to host two parties for the ANC Youth League on April 5 and 6.

"They (said) they were from the Youth League," he told the paper.

He said at the first party, Dlomo paid R8000 on his credit card for a bill of R27 000, spent by a table of 10 people, and said the rest would be settled at the next party.

At the following party, the director said that the entire bottom floor was booked out and VIPs were placed upstairs. The unpaid bills from this night totalled R82 583, including R24 000 for whisky and R10 000 for champagne.

Dlomo told the Sunday Independent he had acted only as a facilitator for a "funder" to meet the restaurant owner.

The newspaper reported that its sister publication, the Sunday Tribune, had evidence of an sms sent by Dlomo which read: "Wanted to tell you that am hosting ANC youth league party tonight at 7pm @Velvet Lounge Florida Road, as my comrade kindly attend".

The ANC Youth League and ANC told the newspaper that the party had not been authorised.

The restaurant owners have approached the police.
