It has been a terrible year for aviation, with an Algerian plane allegedly crashing after going off the radar.

Air Algerie's flight AH5017 has crashed, with over 100 people on board.

"I can confirm that is has crashed," said an unnamed Algerian official, who spoke to Reuters. He declined to say where they plane had crashed, or why.

The plane was flying from Ougadougou in Burkina Faso to Algiers, and disappeared off the radar over Mali, 50 minutes after takeoff.

The list of passengers includes 51 French, 27 Burkina Faso nationals, eight Lebanese, six Algerians, five Canadians, four Germans, two Luxemburg nationals, one Swiss, one Belgium, one Egyptian, one Ukrainian, one Nigerian, one Cameroonian and one Malian, Burkina Faso Transport Minister Jean Bertin Ouedraogo said. The six crew members are Spanish, according to the Spanish pilots' union.

Two French fighter jets have been dispatched to try locate the plane, and Niger security sources said planes were flying over the border to search for the flight.
