Talks about achieving success often include the point ‘have the right attitude’. What does this mean in practice? Izelle Venter, editor-in-chief of Huisgenoot, YOU and Drum shared some practical tips with the My School Dream School SA learners.

10 Principles for success

  1. Find your ‘thing’. You have to find something that you are really great at to make a success of your life. This is hard work – you have to read and be willing to try different things to figure out what it is. There is also often a difference between what you’re really good at and what you think you’re good at. Don’t confuse a hobby with your future – sometimes it’s just a hobby, but only if you find a way to generate money from it, it can also become a career.
  2. Good manners go far. Good manners will always count in your favour, because people notice it! Good manners will open doors that the best education cannot.
  3. Show willingness. Even if you have to work for free, show people that you are willing to work hard. If you show that you really want to do something, that’s the kind of value that employers want to see.
  4. Ask for help. In any area of your life, you can ask for help. There are almost solutions for every type of problem.
  5. Never disregard anyone. Life has a way of using the people around you throughout your life. The connections you make from a young age will still play a role in your life.
  6. Pick your battles. Not everything is worth the time and effort it takes to ‘win’. You don’t always have to be right – choose where you want to invest your energy and talents.
  7. Preparation is a must. You always have to be prepared, not only when it comes to homework. Make sure you know what you are letting yourself in for and impress future employers by doing good research before you even arrive for a job interview.
  8. Turn something bad around. When something bad has happened to you, it presents an enormous opportunity. Think of ways to change something bad into an opportunity for yourself.
  9. Think about the facts and then have a point of view. People who know stuff are sexy. Maybe one of the facts you pick up at school can change your life. Listen to the facts and think about them – you are allowed to have an opinion.
  10. Have an idea. If you are facing a difficult situation, think of a way to get what you want out of it. You have to come with an alternative idea to solve problems and make a success of your life.
