Benedict Cumberbatch doesn't think life will get any better than the news of his Oscar nomination.

The 38-year-old star is in the running for best actor at this year's Academy Awards after wowing critics and film-goers with his performance as mathematician Alan Turing in The Imitation Game.

The ceremony is set to take place this Sunday in Los Angeles and even if he does leave empty handed, Benedict is over the moon to be up for the special accolade in the first place.

'I don't think it's gonna get better than that'

"I was driving to work, I'd just finished filming the Christmas special of Sherlock, which is coming out this Christmas... I was ringing my best friend Adam in London and just checking something else entirely and he was like, 'Oh my God, why the hell are you ringing me now for? It's three minutes until the announcements!' I said, 'What?' And he said, 'The Oscars you p***k,'" he recalled to Jimmy Kimmel with a laugh. "And I just stayed on the line with him and he was listening to it live on the computer and there was a very slightly delay so my agent got in just before my parents did and they'd heard it as well, and it was just... that was the most amazing feeling in the world. I don't think it's gonna get better than that, I don't think it ever will anyway, as far as that moment goes."

Benedict's parents Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham are thespians themselves so were overjoyed by their son's achievement. He describes the moment he spoke to them as "wonderful" and feels lucky to have had their support over the years while fulfilling his dream.

Once award season is wrapped up the handsome Brit has little time to rest; he and his wife Sophie Hunter - who he married on Valentine's Day - are set to become parents for the first time.

When asked if the tot will have his surname, Benedict gave a chuckle and went along with the joke.

"Poor child, I think it will have to. That's kind of the tradition..." he grinned.
