Perhaps your youngster was pretty excited about going to school for the first time recently, but from here on in Mondays could often be a different story . . .

We asked Nora Rossouw, Grade 1 subject head at Laerskool Totius in Cape Town, what you can do to brighten up a blue Monday for your Grade 1 kid.

  • Promise to include a special treat in their lunchbox.
  • Stick a photograph of your whole family on their pencil box so they can see it the whole day.
  • Invite a friend to come over and play at the weekend. This will motivate your child to go to school so they can see each other again.
  • Remind them now they’re really going to learn how to read, write and do sums.
  • Promise them you’ll put aside a special time after school in which they can tell you what they’ve learned.
  • If you discover there’s something specific worrying them, encourage them to tell you about it and then discuss it with the teacher.
