Folks driving peacefully along the N2 near Umgababa on the KwaZulu-Natal coast on Sunday can't really be blamed for pulling over to gawk.

There’s nothing too odd about a group of people walking with a pole on their shoulders – it’s what was hanging from the pole that had jaws dropping.

"As we past the group, we saw this huge pole that they were carrying. On the pole we could see this huge snake wrapped around it," Yolandi Pearce of Pumula, told East Coast Radio. "My husband and I looked at each other - and said 'no ways!'."

The couple, who did a U-turn and came back to see what was going on, estimated the snake was between four and five metres long.

They weren't the only ones, as other passers-by pulled over to immortalise the moment with cellphones and tablets.

Upon closer inspection, Yolandi said the enormous reptile was dead, but was uncertain whether the men had killed it. She said it appeared the group were taking it back to their homes.
